Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Strange pipe with 'hat' in front garden ... any ideas what it is?
Our front garden is lovely grey concrete and we're thinking about what we can do to make it prettier. It has a ceramic pipe sticking out near the boundary wall - a few cms high, with a metal 'hat' on top of it. Anyone know what it is, and whether we can close it off?
I thought it might be to do with the cellar but it is much further out towards the road than that. Now am wondering if it has something to with water/gas???

Could it be a stench pipe (lovely name isn't it?) designed to allow sewage and drainage pipes to 'breathe'.

That's what I was wondering too (didn't know they had such a charming name). This is what it looks like ..
It seems completely blocked - do you think I can just cover it over?

I have one of these, and I believe it is for venting. I wouldn't cover it over (and I might remove some of the more obvious blockages)!

If it is a stench pipe then it really shouldn't be blocked as it was put there for a reason I guess. I think you could replace it with something more subtle that would still function. Incidentally, I think the really large tower at the end of the passage (by Umfreville Road) is fulfilling the same, albeit larger, purpose.

I wonder how many houses in the area have them and how many don't. My front gardens never been concreted over and I don't have one. That could mean you can get away with not having one.
I'd have thought that if you're having a suitable professional over to quote you on another job, it'd be worth asking them.

I've got one and the professional gardener that sorted out my front garden wouldn't cover it up but built raised beds, leaving the pipe and the space around it as concrete. Can't remember why now as it was a while back when we had it done.

Thanks everyone, really helpful. I'm guessing that not everyone would have one because if they're to do with sewers/water then presumably it depends on where the pipes are located?? I think we'll work round it, but might check with Thames Water first, out of curiosity!

Yes, it's a vent pipe for the sewer system. The grille on the front is missing. The purpose is not just to vent gasses but to relive pressure in the system when it's at full flow during wet weather.
Best not to bury it. The soil in the opening should be cleared and wire mesh put over the opening to prevent small animals entering - and exiting!
