Free parking to support local traders on Small Business Saturday 3rd December
Parking charges across the borough will be waived to support local high streets on Small Business Saturday which is on the 3rd December.
It will be free to park in council-run town centre car parks and pay and display bays on the day, which aims to celebrate local traders and encourage people to shop locally as they gear up for the festive season.
There is also a host of activities planned across the borough to mark Small Business Saturday including:
Wood Green High Road will have entertainment including a Christmas Tree lights, a choir singing carols, live music and DJs, salsa dancing and pop-up stalls on the corner of Lymington Avenue.
In Crouch End there is a Christmas Craft Market running from 10am to 5pm.
Tottenham Winter Festival – from 12 – 6pm on Tottenham Green with Christmas Tree lights at 5pm (featuring a special guest), a range of market stalls, family activities and live music performances .
On Sunday 4th December there will also be the Myddleton Road Winter Festival including a Santa’s grotto, music, craft and food and drink stalls, a fun-fair and other children’s activities.
Controlled Parking Zones and other essential parking restrictions including road works will remain in force on Small Business Saturday.

Not only do only 50% of Haringey have cars - but many including myself - wouldn't dream of using them to pop along to the shops locally. For me a car is a necessity when leaving London.
This is tokenism.

I've just read the press release at the top again
"........encourage people to shop locally as they gear up for the festive season"
So local people are being encouraged to drive a few hundred metres to go to a local shop?!!!!

Perhaps all car owners on the Ladder should go and park early on Green Lanes but not buy anything ?

Agree, I was struck by that line too. It only really makes sense if you see this as being about boosting sales for local businesses. Which I have no problem with, but a) don't dress it up as something else and b) why not be a bit more imaginative about it and try something that doesn't involve encouraging more cars on to already clogged streets?

Maybe something like half a dozen mini-buses doing a free pick up and drop off circuit around the venues listed in the press release so you could try out places you wouldn't normally go?
I can't see any "new" shoppers heading off to places they don't normally go. They'll just head for their normal shopping places and leave their cars for free for the day rather than moving after an hour or two, while others circle around waiting for a free space. Not only does the concept go against everything Haringey is preaching in its environmental and traffic policies and loses money from parking that they can ill afford, but I can't even see if getting any extra trade to shops.

I've also been reading this again as I'm sure I must be missing something. But our local Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Peray Ahmet has spelled it out even more clearly: “Free parking across Haringey is a fantastic way to mark Small Business Saturday and will encourage people to drive and shop local rather than use public transport to head to the West End as they look for Christmas gifts.” [my italics!].
It's a while since I read 1984 - isn't this a prime example of doublethink?

Good grief, how does anyone come to that as being a good idea? Having stirred up this hornets nest I've not been paying attention, great to see so many people agree about this . I wonder how busy the High st was on saturday? I was in Gokyuzu for lunch, seemed quiet down there, but I imagine up around the shopping mall would have been chaos.
