Power Flush Central Heating
Hi Everyone,
We were recommended by British Gas to have a Power Flush on our central heating system, as we have recently had issues with the boiler. The engineer said 'we had a lot of sludge that needed to be removed'. The price they quote is £780 which is almost double the quotes I googled. However, they state that the next one would be 'free of charge' (generally every 10 years).
Has anybody ever had this run through their system as I have been warned that it is very powerful and can cause leaks in the radiator. Also, a number of people I have asked have never heard of it!

We had a new boiler put in a year ago. The old one had been there for about 30 years, as had the radiators. British Gas quoted (almost twice the quote we finally accepted, from a local plumber/fitter), and insisted we needed a power flush, which pushed up the total price a lot. The local plumber said we didn't need it, and there was a risk it would lead to leaks. He fitted a filter, to prevent any bit of rust etc getting into the new boiler, which has to be checked once a year. We have had no problems. As other people here have recommended, consult one of the local plumbers (there are a number of really good ones recommended on the website) and don't believe BG, who will do anything to ramp up their charges.

The British Gas power flush is a well known attempt by them to bump up charges. We also used an alternative local plumber (A&P Gas) to put in a new boiler, and they put a magnetic trap on. The trap had almost nothing on it after 12 months, thus demonstrating that the power flush was unnecessary.

Hello, Jan,
I have have recently had my boiler changed (due to old age), and was told that as I had a 'closed system', with a combo boiler not a flat, I only needed the chemical,flush. They installed a magnet that filters away debris and also a hard water reducing device, whichnImwas told was sufficient for my system. Perhaps you have a different system, and may need a more thorough clean, but I thought I'd mention it anyway!
