Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Warwick Gardens Prefabs.. We lived at no.69 until it was demolished in 1960.  This and other maps can be viewed side by side on the National Library of Scotland's site:

I'm not sure if anyone has posted this link before, so here it is http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=18&lat=51.57...

There were rifle ranges nearby - what is marking?

Sounds right.

Hornsey Wood House and its grounds were a key leisure destination for Londoners in the late eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth century. The old manor house was turned first into a tea house and then expanded to become a sizeable tavern

Sorry, so many houses about..

which one was Hornsey House?  Hornsey Wood Farm or 'Haringey' House (sic)  ??

Typo - I meant Hornsey Wood House - it was formed out of Copt Hall, the old Manor house

Since it's adjacent to the rifle range and the butt ( where the targets would be ) I would guess it was a shelter for the poor sods who had to mark the arrival of the bullets and paste up the targets.

Why the National Library of Scotland?  How did these maps end up there, or is it part of a larger project to put before and now shots side by side?

It's a nationwide project..

...and I thought you might mention the Wightman Road Bridge on the 1869 map.. It's clear from that map why the angle of the bridge is where it is.. Because originally the road to it came from the South.

The NLS map librarian is a legend. Librarian *and* knows his technology, and puts them together in brilliant ways. Follow him on twitter for regular updates of mappy goodness!

I used to go to Woodlands Park School and in my class there was a kid named Frankie Morcambe (not sure of the spelling).  He used to bully me a lot, at one time he made me go to the post office and draw money out of my post office account.  He lived in those prefabs.   There were two other boys on Warwick Gardens - Brian Hoare and Tony Friend.  Quite recently I got a photo of our class, and it amazes me now to think I was ever scared of him.  Wonder what happened to him.

I think I've heard the name before.. did you go on to South Grove school? And I'm sure my sister used to mention him.

I didn't go to South Grove but my brother did in about 1952 or 1953.  I went to Tottenham County

Same with me Brian, my brother and sister were at South Grove around about the time your brother was there. I was ten years younger and went to another school.
