Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hey all

Bit of a rant here. What is the story with Costa Coffee taking up more than half of the pavement with signage and tables? Is that actually allowed? Check the attached photo.

My partner earlier today was pushing our son in a buggy and had to stop and wait for a people walking in a single in order to get around their signage and barriers. She went in and complained but they never bothered to move them. I went back in later when i saw they were still taking up more than half of the pavement. The girl didnt believe me and she smuggly told me to show her. Which i did, and they moved them.

Anyone know what the law is with this? How much space can they actually legally take? We'll need to walk in the gutter soon.

Why is John Forde's team disappearing?

Hi John, I have had exactly the same experience as you. They seen to care more for money than anything related to community. Well i know what a big chain they are, of course it is money, money AND money but why have they chosen such a very inconvenient spot? This is not a rant but a completely JUSTIFIED and serious complaint.

In my experience the best way to get companies to take notice of a complaint is to  politely tell them about the problem on Twitter. I think a brief comment plus a photo will get their attention.

Thanks for posting.  Hala was doing the same with its outside seating the other day and I was also wondering what the law is.  I didn't want to complain to the Council without knowing if they were in the wrong but I guess it's worth asking them if no-one else knows.

Complain on their Facebook page.
Displaying goods or having tables and chairs on the footpath requires permission and payment for a licence.

I don't actually believe that all of those doing this on Green Lanes have this, but I can imagine that Costa, as a big company, probably has a team at their HQ who just do licence applications. Even with a licence the rule are strict, especially about how much of the footpath is taken up and how goods can be displayed. In Haringey there is supposed to be an absolute prohbition on using crates etc., as display stands but this is flouted all along GL.

You should drive if you have heavy bags. Innit.

Sense of humour fail. Innit should have given it away, no?

I tried to get past Bun and Bar the other week and had to walk on the road as there wasn't enough room between their huge tables and the tree with folks congregating there. I meant to complain but forgot, I don't know if it's still like that or not.

Not particularly a Costa fan but is that really any worse than any other business on GL?

It's not just Costa or other restaurants. The fruit and veg shops are just as guilty. And the street landscaping around the bus stop near Barclays is beyond a joke
