Candidates and Chair (Left to right): David Allen, standing-in for Cansoy Elmaz (Conservative), Neville Watson (UKIP), Jarell Francis (Green Party), Bruce Kent (Chair), Zena Brabazon (Labour), David Schmitz, standing in for Karen Alexander (Liberal Democrats).
Tonight saw the hustings for the Harringay Ward By-Election. After 5 minute introductions by each candidate, questions were taken from the floor. Every candidate then gave their answers to every question, each taking about three minutes. That gave time for about four of five questions. Topics included the candidates views on homophobia, pollution caused by traffic, the management of private rented homes, and provision for autistic adults.
All candidates and their stand-ins handled themselves well.
I'd be interested to hear what others who attended thought of the evening.

The Green guy was very good, he banged on about Socialist stuff rather than Green stuff though. I think he's just too embarrassed to be in the Labour Party. Zena was asked a question that seemed almost a plant she answered it so well. A shame Karen wasn't there as she's a bit more of a fighter than David I find.
Even the Tory stand in was very good.

You know Billy - if someone had written that about me i.e. that if you give me a job, I'd need my husband to help me do it, I'd be pretty offended. Indeed I'd say it reeked of #everydaysexism. Hopefully, my little deconstruction of your slogan will help you understand why I might be of that opinion.

No, that's not how he means it Jessica, and I think you must know that. His well-known antipathy to Alan Stanton (justified or not) means you could not possibly take his two for the price of one slogan as a positive spin on it.
Billy, I didn't have to go out of my way to find sexism. I found it right here in that comment. I'm generally not the sort to call it out online unless it is what it is. I know that comment was not intended to be anything other than undermining. As if Zena couldn't possibly have her own mind, expertise or skills but is merely "sneaking" Alan back into the council by the back door. Don't let your personal dislike of a candidate blind you to the bigger picture. Attack Zena for what you perceive to be *her* mistakes. She is not her husband and she shouldn't be expected to answer for him or his past errors.

Yes, you can. So what has *SHE* done on her own to you that fits *your* narrative. You might not like being called out on this but Zena's tireless efforts for early years provision, children's centres and, as a councillor, widening participation in Area Assemblies to residents are entirely based on her own experience and skills; Alan has very little to offer in that arena, I'm sure he won't mind me saying. That she has shared an opinion or two with her husband that has wound you up should not mean that you dismiss her candidacy as simply Alan Mk2 which is what you did with your comment, "vote brabazon, get stanton" - it was a careless, hastily written bit of cattiness. Surely you don't want to continue to defend it?

I don't think whether you know Billy is the issue. You chose to defend his comment today on this thread. The *I think you must know that* referred to the fact that I'm sure that you are aware that Billy joins threads to express his views about certain member of the site, including our current candidate and that is was unlikely that the comment was intended to be positive but... well *shrugs*... your views and mine clearly differ on the way this was expressed but personally I would hate for anyone to imply I was not my own woman and that my husband had undue influence over me. I would call it sexism. And I still do.
