I've got an old laptop now no longer used, plus a 1tb and 500m external hard drives. Anyone got any suggestions on the best (and safest) ways to dispose of them? Thinking both of the environment but also not wanting any data from them to be reconstituted. And preferably local! Thanks.

Ideally you want to take the HDD out and drill some holes in it.
If you want it to still be usable then something like this should wipe the HDD http://www.dban.org/
After you've done that though bear in mind that there'll be no operating system on the machine and any recovery files on the HDD will have been deleted.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. In the end, I took them all to Computeraid and was really pleased that I did. It's a fantastic charity, recycling old technology for Africa and South America. But even better, they guarantee to wipe your drives and to email you within a month with a certificate confirming they've done it. Very impressive (and I think they'll also collect). I'd really recommend using them if you find yourself in the same position as me.
