Haringey is one of six London boroughs where new armed police patrols will be deployed to patrol shooting hotspots.
Whilst Harringay along with Crouch End and Muswell Hill is unlikely to be affected, the patrols will not be many miles from home.
Other boroughs included will be Newham, Hackney, Brent, Lambeth and Southwark.
Operation Viper, involving 50 officers, will target gun crime in these areas with marksmen accompanying officers on traffic stops along with weapons sweeps and raids.
Scotland Yard said the majority of shootings last year involved handguns. Among victims 42% had links to gangs, and half of victims had links to drug dealing.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe told journalists “Clearly in some areas there is a gang element to it but that doesn’t account for all of it. The fact that we’re seeing it across the country in the big cities probably indicates that we’re talking about more supply.”

I'm confused. We already have Armed response police https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specialist_Firearms_Command that patrol areas in high speed cars 24/7. They are tooled up with every kind of firearm to meet each case scenario. How is operation 'Viper' different except as a compliment of more persons carrying weapons ?
The armed response police you describe are called in to an ongoing incident.
Operation Viper armed officers are attached to standard patrols so they're on the spot - no delay in response.
Walking around the high street with weapons openly displayed? Nice.
sorry GT that doesn't make sense
Try the different form of words, saying the same thing, in the Guardian article linked below - thanks anne-marie for the spot.
''Hogan-Howe stressed that gun crime was still at a lower level than five years ago.'' I think it's wrong to say that terrorists rely on criminals to arm them. Terrorists by their very nature are incomparably more organised and as seen will arm themselves when they feel like it. to use terrorism as an excuse for having more armed police officers is lazy logic. There may or may not be a good reason to have more armed officers but to use dog whistle scare mongering is wrong. It's that unnecessary constant drip-feed of fear that annoys me. There is virtually zero gun crime in UK. When put into perspective with any other rich indutrialised country UK should be proud of that fact not trying to whip up a frenzy of fear about it.
'Hogan-Howe stressed that gun crime was still at a lower level than five years ago, and others in law enforcement stress that guns are still a rare commodity on Britain’s streets. He said: “Firearm use is thankfully still rare in London and rarely affects those not involved in crime – but I am very concerned about the recent increase, and we are determined to stop it.”'
and
'Police will offer rewards of up to £2,000 to people – most likely fellow criminals – who inform on those with guns.'
So it's just for show, they're not really serious. The risk involved in dobbing someone who is armed into the police is not worth the £2,000 payoff.
I agree with you JohnMc. On the one hand he says that gun crime and gun availabilty is at a record low and on the other hand he is blowing his fear inducing dog whistle.
I wouldn't know, only criminals can hear police whistles.
