At my friend's recommendation, I went for a little ride along Wight man rd this morning
Now don't get me wrong, I really do feel for people who have no alternative than to rely on this for their daily commute.BUT for us cyclists what bliss. It is fantastic. I always try to avoid the road as much as possible as it is so dangerous for us, with drivers going fast trying to overtake us on too narrow roads as we slog it uphill.
It was lovely to see so many cyclists and pedestrians around. One lady was having a lesson as she had decided the best solution to the closure was to cycle to work.
But I'm not sure closing the road permanently or restricting traffic is the solution, as it would put even more strain on green lanes. But certainly it needs to be made safer.

For people (like me) who want to have a look at these schemes, the one in the picture and in the slides the tweet links to is actually Place de la Nation, not Place de la Republique as it states. Crossing the road at Place de la Nation makes Green Lanes seem like a quiet little bridle way in deepest Devon. If they can sort that out in Paris, well..........

Anyone else witnessed how horrendous Green Lanes is this morning? Looked solid from Turnpike Lane to Manor House assume it because all the schools are now back.

I haven't been out there yet but I suspected that would be the case. Mine is due at school in 20 mins so I expect it will peak around that time....

I've just completed my first new route school run, it took half an hour longer than usual. Really slow/at a stand still on Green Lanes and Turnpike Lane. I think I can manage the morning by going earlier but pick up is going to be tricky getting back in time to get my daughter. I've got someone else to pick her up this week but I can't do that for 14 weeks so I'm hoping it calms down soon.

Well I wish you good luck for this afternoon. I see you're already counting down the weeks! I'm not convinced the school traffic will "calm down" as it did when Wightman Rd first closed given that the options for alternative routes to/from certain schools are limited. I was quite pleased to see very few children being dropped off by car this morning at my son's school. Only one in fact.

Strangely I found Green Lanes was fine when I cycled down it towards Manor House at 8:30 am - I had expected a complete standstill but it was nothing like that and traffic was moving reasonably well.

There seems no rhyme or reason to it. I took the bus up to Wood Green at 9:30 and it was jammed. My husband did the same journey at 8:30 and it was a breeze.

That's been my experience too. When I left to walk boy chick to school at 8.45 the north bound traffic was stationary. Ten minutes later as I walked to Harringay Green Lanes station it seemed to be moving ok. I think perhaps is that it only takes a couple of things to happen at the same time (a dodgy parker, someone blocking a junction) for it to back up. I don't have a real explanation for the inconsistency I've experienced.

And on Hornsey High Street at 8.45am, there was actually less traffic than normal and it was flowing very freely past the New River Village and down under the railway bridge. Very unexpected indeed (particularly as Sunday saw a near-perfect standstill all the way round Ally Pally down Hornsey Park Road and back up Hornsey High Street to the start of Ally Pally again.

Sundays seem to be a nightmare. Work colleague said she tried popping down to Harringay from Palmers Green to pick up her mother. Traffic problems started from Palmers Green. She got as far as Bounds Green and resorted to asking her mother to meet her half way. Her mother tried buses, they were stuck in traffic so she walked instead. At the end of the day she sent her mother back by train. Adjustments, adjustments.
