I'm with Antoinette on this one.
And if any road should be closed to cars it should be traffic. That way pedestrians could shop without looking out for cars and lorries and cyclists could get home along a flat, straight road without worrying about cars pulling out into them. Wightman Road will always be a far less attractive option for cyclists I would suggest because of the terrain. In addition, Green Lanes is a preferable option for I imagine most cyclists in Harringay because it is in the middle of Harringay unlike Wightman Road which is on the periphery - although from many of the posts on here one would have thought everyone in Harringay lives on the Ladder (which may be many posters' understanding).

This was the council's original plan. Wightman Rd was to be one half of a one way bypass of Green Lanes. I think they might be rethinking that.

Also might not look so nice for much longer as our bins haven't been emptied since last Wednesday at the Norh end. The council apologise for the delay 'it's due to the road being closed'..... although I thought they'd made contingencies for bins... only found out about the road closing 2 days before it did as they didn't think to drop us a note and we live on the road.

Post Office boxes have also been sealed up on the ladder. Guess it's because they don't like the new road layout and they now serve their shareholders rather than customers.

All post boxes on the Ladder? If so this seems like an excuse to continue to shave the number of collection points. The one on Hewitt was taken away without warning a few years back.

I don't understand the bin thing. There's no reason for them not to have been emptied. All the roads at perfectly accessible. If you ever have a missed collection, you should call Veolia on 020 8885 7700. Try them.

Sarah, ring up Veolia as Hugh suggests and ask them if their driver has the key to unlock the bollards.

Yep, have done. They apologise for the delay it's due to the road being closed. They will try and do it by Sunday. This was Friday. Still not done yesterday. Away today so can't check if they've been done. Hopefully they'll get them tomorrow if not as it should be Wednesday anyway.

Funny. We had a Sainsbury shop delivered this afternoon. The guy apologised for being early- the roads are a lot clearer so he is making his deliveries quicker he said.

Just read my post back.
What I MEANT to say was if any road should be closed to traffic it's Green Lanes, leaving the cars etc to find other routes. Cycling along Green Lanes is easier than cycling Wightman Road and we need to get people visiting the restaurants and shops on Green Lanes out of their massive belching Mercedes and using their feet for a change...

Contrary to Antoinette's asssertion, I spoke to a member of the London Assembly who isn't quite so sure that the roads will open again if... if... the community makes a big enough fuss to keep them closed. There's a lot of juice on this here forum. I'd support any campaign to keep the streets closed, or the rat run streets at the very least, like all those roads on the other side of Green Lanes. What are our chances, chaps?
