Police Warn Against Using Santander Cash Machines

Police have warned bank customers against using Santander cash machines as security has been 'compromised' in a number of incidents.
Initially the problem popped up in the North and both Lancashire Police and Cheshire Police have put out warnings that a number of ATMs have been targeted with 'a variety of suspicious devices'.
Last week, officers in Muswell Hill also warned customers not to use the machines as they investigates a potential scam involving fake number keys.
The Police said, "Santander ATMs have been targeted with a variety of suspicious devices. At present, the advice is to not use them".

The Santander cash machines on Crouch End Broadway seem to be a consistent target, as evidenced by the number of bespoke police messages by them. About a year ago at 7.45am the slot seemed to be a bit clunky in use and I could not get any cash and my debit card was retained by said machine, or at least that's what the misspelt message on the screen said. I went into the branch more or less when it opened. They opened up the machine, there was a card retained but it wasn't mine. They gave me a number to call. I felt that I wasn't being believed so I called the police as well as Santander. It turned out that someone, I never found out who, had somehow obtained my card and PIN within minutes of my use and gone on a spree on Crouch End Broadway.
I got my money back and, to be fair to Santander, some compensation for the way I was treated, but one should indeed be vigilant and aware.
Incidentally a few weeks later the Co-op machine attached to the garage on Tottenham Lane retained my debit card having paid me my withdrawal. The event sent me into a "why me" tizzy, which was exacerbated by the Co-op staff explaining that the machine is nothing to do with them: I needed to call the owners and my bank. This time a simple systems fault was blamed, no harm done aside from the inconvenience.
