The amount of money spent moving this guy around so that she would not find him out is ridiculous. Helen should be offered a job in the Met and the bozos involved in this should all do seven years indentured servitude in the colonies.
Didn't realise Helen was subject to this ridiculous tactic although had heard about other cases. Hope she got compensation.
I think they all got "something". Nothing like what was spent hiding all those domestic extremism spies though I bet. I wonder if Nigella is being spied upon? Oh wait, she's domestic goddess isn't she?
I have nothing but total respect for Helen Steel, an amazing tenacious woman in this and in her campaign against McD.
I don't think any compensation covers the extent of state sponsored sexual and mental abuse meted out by the met, and shows to what depths they will sink.
The police have not released information and tried to block any truth coming out for years. There is an up and coming enquiry into the whole undercover police question.http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/undercover-with-paul-lewis-and-r...
I think the nastiest aspect of this is that the police refuse to rule out doing it in future. A law unto themselves.
You think that they have good reasons for doing everything they do?
I'm currently at episode 8 of Making a Murderer and need some LSD or something to continue with it. Just so weird and sad.
John - just finished watching this extraordinary documentary. Now i'm watching (not in one go obvs) the zimmerman trial. it's about 100hrs long
Odd muppet? I dont think so. There are eight cases uncovered so far. With respect you seem to be a little naive. You should have a read of this website. www.policespiesoutoflives.org.uk
"Like any big organisation they sometimes make mistakes and let the odd muppet onto the payroll. But generally yes i think they try to do the right thing."
They are not 'any' big organisation, they are 'our' police invested in protecting us and not treating 'us' as if we are criminals.
The undercover investigations of 'eight women' is not a one off, a mistake, perpetrated by an odd muppet, and this is the really frightening thing. Certain people and groups over a fourty year period were identified by the police, by the state, as potential 'enemies of the state', and were subjected to undercover investigations, abuse, smear campaigns and black lists to stop them getting work. None of these people had commited a crime, all of these people were following their democratic, legitimate rights.
Police whistleblowers have confirmed that amongst those investigated and followed as if they were criminals were those who were the victims of crimes such as the Laurence family. Also followed were people whose family members had died in suspicious circumstances at the hands of the police.
Anyone involved in any form of political activity from Greenpeace, animal rights, anti racism, CND, The Heathrow Association for the Control of aircraft Noise, etc etc were investigated as fair game and records kept, and you have to question as to what was the indended use of these records.
The police also handed information onto third parties from their undercover operations; for 16 years a secret organisation "The Consulting Association" run by the construction industry was fed information by the police on individual trades unuionists and activists to form a blacklist so that these individuals would be blacklisted from ever gaining employment within the construction industry.
Trades Unions were investigated and certain MPs and politicians had secret police files (identities yet to be confirmed) such as our previous MP Bernie Grant.
The undercover police were so embedded sometimes having relationships with women for up to eight years and fathering children however it appears that they may also have acted as agent provocatuers in initiating activities in the organisations and groups that they were collecting information on.
None of this fits the 'one off' or 'rogue operator' excuse as it was endemic from1968, none of the people being investigated and suffering from abuse were doing anything illegal, and it goes to show how part of our society was viewed for so long as the 'enemy within'.
