Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

National Grid has organised a display and will be on hand to answer questions about the next steps in the redevelopment of Heartlands, ahead of the demolition of the gas holders and site clearance work starting in March, 2016.

Lots of HGV traffic on the Ladder. Hurrah!

Explain John, how so? You mean using Wightman as a cut through, or rat running to get to Green Lanes?

Well, if that happens at least we know we can complain to National Grid rather than Anonymous Lorry Firm.

Like we can complain to Network Rail you mean... The lorry drivers are all contractors, so we have to go down the route of chasing Nat Grid to ensure their contractors do the right thing.

A few months ago the Muppets from the Hornsey works decided to cut up and down the ladder in their trucks. One every 20 mins. I got one using his phone as he drove down Pemberton and he then had the cheek to stop and give me a gob full... Nice.

All those horse and carts trundling past, turning up the dirt road you mean?  Bouncing over the uneven surfaces so the earth movement and vibration can be felt a whole 12 inches away (Imperial, not metric)? Yes, there is always a price to pay for development isn't there.  It's a wonder the 'Palmers Green Reparations Campaign' has not had more success for their historic claims to compensation over the last 120 years.

The difference is I guess in the 1890's most folks just had not worked out how to do it better... There being no weight restrictions, speed limits or restrictions on driving a 15+ tonne vehicle in a residential street whilst using a hand held device (be it a phone or a loud hailer).

I did go along, thanks. As expected, the exhibit was more about site clearance and the gasometers rather than building Heartlands.

The thousands of tons of building materials bought in over a decade will cause the true mayhem, it's a shame they couldn't inaugurate a railway sidings into it from the existing tracks to bring the materials in.

Thanks for coming, you are correct, the National Grid are only responsible for site clearance. Even this will take until way into 2017 and have serious impact on the area.

We know this process can be frustrating and tedious, but the fact is, unless we actually show up in person and keep nagging them to look after the interests of the existing residents, we will have no influence at all.

We have already had a few concessions (such as the use of Clarendon Rd instead of Hornsey Park Road and that we will be keeping the lime trees).

An angry tweet or forum post will not help much unless a lot of people show an actual interest and come to boring meetings and exhibitions and stuff.
