Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm just about to move back to Burgoyne road from working abroad.
We used to use plusnet for broadband through a BT line up to when we were here last, 3 years ago. We kept getting promised the prospect of super fast fibre broadband being just around the corner but now I'm looking on all the "what's available in your area" searches and they all say that 3-5Mb is the best we'll get through any ADSL provider. We are on the Crouch End exchange and although fibre runs there the database and the BT website says that they still have not ran fibre to our cabinet .... So all those 37mb/76mb offers are not available.

Now there's a lot of bad press for Virgin media on H.O.L. but I wonder if their pure broadband service has improved since their claims of improving the infrastructure?

Whilst we rented our flat out, our tenants had virgin cable installed and although I am sure you can get congestion problems with docsis 3 cable modems just like any other overloaded network, does any continued customer of virgin still think it would be a bad idea to go with virgin this time around?

We don't need a TV package, we think we don't need a phone but we would like a dependable internet only service that we can stream iplayer and use Skype with.

Give plusnet a call as fibre should be available to your road, unless BT hasn't allowed access yet. Have seen virgin's better cable announcement (including imminent price increase) but as far as I'm aware this still doesn't include new cabinets on each road, which are rammed to bursting with your neighbour's connections. Cabinets are old from when Virgin took over from NTL.

We have the same problem - Virgin Media is expensive but nothing else is available that gives the same speeds. They are just about to increase the price for all by 10% for 'improvements'. We have had a few problem with the internet over the last 3 years but nothing particularly long term. We recently renewed our contract but would switch as soon as possible if any other company offered comparable service...

Well Alice, since checking last week something happened on the openreach site yesterday saying that my address is now eligible for superfast broadband:
http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/default.aspx?pc...

Suddenly all the other phone line based providers are all saying that I can have fibre to cabinet connections at my address....

Which now means I have to decide on a provider rather than take the only one available at the higher speeds (Virgin).

Hmmmm was really hopeful that we would have some more choices but checked out the link and seems Pemberton Road isn't yet eligible. Oh dear...will have to continue with Virgin...

I am planning to switch from Virgin when my contract runs out - I would not recommend them

What happens with Virgin that causes problems not faced by the local copper boys is that they employ subcontractors to connect your house. As addresses went from houses to flats they would just loop in another connection at the property. The trouble is that these were not accounted for and they run out of local power but in a funny way that means that the service degrades and people initially live with it. You learn to power cycle your router and the problem goes away for another day. When you eventually contact Virgin it's not until a few phone calls and maybe a couple of visits that they realise that they need to increase the power for the node you're on, probably by splitting it out onto new hardware.

The state you're in by the time you call them and their attitude towards you are the perfect storm for some pretty confrontational conversations. I understand the desire to teach them a lesson and leave but they don't seem to want to support this orphan network (so don't care) and nobody comes close locally for broadband speed.

The WIFI routers that all broadband operators supply are very low power too so you end up extending all over your house with TPLinks and Wifi extenders. When you had to provide your own router you could easily share with the neighbours and they really don't want that. Imagine if your broadband bill was halved and we all stopped having these power/reliability issues?

BT Infinity is not that cheap but is fast and I have found them very responsive and quick to act on problems

Broadband supplier -

Cheap, Fast, Reliable.

Pick any two of three

So there's been a change to the openreach map in the last few days since I checked a week ago.  Superfast broadband is now available in my area which now means I have a whole host of providers to choose from:

http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/buy-it-now/

So, although I have been a long term Force9/Plusnet customer (just because I was with them when they started up in Sheffield) I am tempted to have our super-fast broadband supplied by the least corporate of all resellers (that's all they are right? Unless you go direct to BT) The Co-operative :

It's a long shot but has anybody used them?

I gave up on Virgin last summer and have been with Zen that use Openreach.

It is more expensive but the speeds are consistent  - we do not have the periods where the we saw big drops. On the face of it the download speeds are not as high (consistently round the 70 mark) - but we never have a problem with that. The upload speeds are much better with Zen , consistently around 19.  I found the upload speeds too poor on Virgin.

Zen's response to any infrequent problems (theirs or BT) is first class.
