Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Labour makes some great points about the threatened return of a major event in a public park. These are their key ones:

  • Event decision steamrollered
  • Strong opposition by local residents
  • Disappointing organisation
  • Lack of confidence for further events
  • Concerns about safety
  • Disruption in the summer
  • Concerns about lengthy set-up and take-down times
  • Poor public consultation
  • Excessive noise from loudspeakers

“We have had a steady stream of emails from local residents opposing this event very strongly and claiming that they have not had any response from the Leader of the Council. The council has also not said how it would spend the revenue from the event, so residents cannot put up with this amount of disruption to their local park if they cannot see any benefit.”

The language you use it not particularly polite, e.g. "sneering", "you and your cronies", "first to moan", "Clive's deceit". You just come across and angry and ranty. You've also attacked Clive for how he presented his argument and led us all off on a merry dance about how he's a liar and you don't like him.

He's just annoyed that he fell for Clive's little trap.

Everybody has!!

So John D, you're saying it was deceit.

Traps usually are.

Personally, I couldn't care a toss about what happens or about the friends of this or that park. It's all pretty banal tribalism.

Personally, I would not make dismissive remarks about parks overseas (such as about parks in Berlin, which is where I understand you reside).

For example, I noted the protests about the threats to develop Gezi park in Istanbul and I wouldn't say I don't give a toss.

Parks can be political, even totemic.

No, I said on page 2 that it was not deceit.

Funny that you mention Berlin Clive .. Now I wasn't going to mention it, but our parks are much nicer than anything I've seen in London and there are more of them, with better facilities and of course, better organised.

The Berlin Senat has set up a limited company to develop new and run many existing parks all over the City, in order to avoid the nasty political bickering that Clive insists on continuing. (the Boroughs still run smaller parks).  You might like to take a look Clive. http://www.gruen-berlin.de/

Many of the newer parks are on brown field sites.. like the Gardens of the World http://www.gruen-berlin.de/parks-gaerten/gaerten-der-welt/ Gallery: http://www.gruen-berlin.de/parks-gaerten/gaerten-der-welt/ueberblic...

Or the Tempelhofer Feld, an enormous park in the inner city, a former airport, which after a city wide referendum is now used as a park. http://www.gruen-berlin.de/parks-gaerten/tempelhofer-feld/besucheri...

And lastly Gleisdreieck, former railway land, with railway relics.. http://www.gruen-berlin.de/parks-gaerten/park-am-gleisdreieck/bilde...

Berlin, is a much greener city than London, with Forests, Beaches, and tree lined streets everywhere. But of course, I'm only mentioning because you brought it up. On my last visit to Finsbury Park in 2014, I thought it look rather tatty, unloved and rather, well.. yuk.

It's about formua E car racing in Battersea Park
OK, would it be legitimate for me to post this

Lib Dem councillor defects to Jeremy Corbyn's Labour

- Leader Tim Farron "doesn't seem to stand for anything
- Criticised former party for "parroting Tory economic policies
- “The Labour Party’s policies are more in line with my own views

And then provide a link to the story at the bottom

But not mention that it happened a few weeks ago in Richmond?

So the Lib Dem councillor has defected to the reportedly disaffected. Out of the frying pan into the fire :)

David Miliband is reported to be allowed to cut his 5 year contract over in NYC by 18mths in order return to the flay late 2018. The way JC is running things this looks more & more likely, unless Momentum destroys David's chances, which seems to be part of their mission - New New Labour? If such a new centre left party has to be set up watch various Lib Dems following current 'new' Labour Party MPs going over.

Over at Tory HQ Osborne is tightening his grip (moving into security, school & defence briefs via his budget/policy decisions this week). It's going to need a very strong opposition leader to take him on in 2020.

COUNCILLORS will make a decision on the future of the event at a Town Hall committee meeting tonight—24 November.

Good luck to the Labour Councillors, who've clearly set out their principled position.

Park defenders from over London will attend that meeting.

More info. about the Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting, here.

I may have missed it but has anyone discussed anywhere the issue that Clive is waving above us all? It's a LABOUR group in Wandsworth opposing events in the park (in this case Formula E) and the parallels with the situation in Haringey are as interesting as the contradictions. It's not about LABOUR/LIBDEM, it's about being in power vs. being in opposition. Yes it's more fun being in power and getting involved in "doing" things but stopping people doing things is important too.
