The Guardian's Lucy Mangan writes (in today's Daily Telegraph, Saturday 17 Oct. 2015)-:
"Leaf-blowers and leaf-blowing drive me mad for many reasons. First and foremost , there’s the selfishness they represent. It is not possible to use a leaf-blower and not know that you are are disturbing the peace of dozens and dozens of people around you, some of whom may be on night shifts and in desperate need of sleep, others who may for the rest of the day be the victims of further aural assaults from the aforementioned un-napped, babies, others who simply long for a patch of silence to call their own.
Then there’s the mindless rejection of older, better ways in favour of the superficially easier. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: raking. It’s cheap, it’s invigorating, it’s efficient, it’s healthy, it’s non-polluting, it’s silent ."
A letter in the same paper praises Haringey Council roadsweepers, who use brooms.

Electric/Petrol lawn mowers also seem ridiculous when the alternatives are so cheap and effective. I have one of these and love it.
Ha! The old-style push mower with a large cast-iron roller at the rear that turns the cutting blades by chain drive worked OK because it was heavy enough not to skid on the grass - I know, I cut my parents' lawn for years using one. The modern side-wheel design has hard plastic wheels, is too light, and skids - even when I tried using big elastic bands round the wheels to improve grip. Like you, I tried, gave up regretfully, and have an electric one now.
A supposedly professional local company seems to have a 3 weekly contract to do a neighbours garden. Unless your selling, or have Fyllophobia (fear of leaves) or some sort of garden OCD, is it REALLY necessary!
They smell, disturb wildlife and pets and probably up the cost to the client!
