Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone else in the Venetia Road area have TV Interference?

We've just come back from holiday and our TV signal from both Freeview (i.e. via the aerial) and Freesat (via satellite dish) are pretty scrambled. There's nothing obviously wrong with the aerial or satellite dish visually, and if it seems odd that both Freeview and Freesat are affected.

A quick search online says interference could be coming from other signals nearby (eg taxi office) so just wondering if anyone else is affected? Anyone else have any tips?!

Thanks
Ian

Unlikely that both Freeview and Freesat would be affected. Can you try with another TV set ?

Thanks John. I thought it was odd that both were affected. We don't have any other TV set unfortunately. Other online sources say it could be electrical Interference so have unplugged everything else in the room, but to no avail.

Assume you have wiggled all the connectors ( normally pathetic French-design SCARTS ) in case of bad contact ? Is the Freeview tuner internal to the TV set or an external box ?

Is the scrambling where the picture breaks up into blocks ?

Hi John, yes wiggled and even blown on the cables for luck! It's a fairly new Samsung TV with integrated tuners. Have retuned the TV also - and the channels were all found with high signal quality indicated, so the signal is making it to the TV. It is scrambling into blocks as you say.

Strangely, we have an old Sky Box, so I've hooked that up using the same satellite lead that resulted in scrambled freesat, and it seems to be working if we view via the Sky Box. Our Sky subscription has expired but it's working now as a Freesat box essentially - so at least we have TV.

Still can't work out why we have the original Interference though! We've just borrowed some cables from a neighbour so that may help.

It is possible that a local taxi office could be using poor quality or faulty equipment, but your dish would have to be fairly close to affect it and your TV would only pixelate when their radios are busy, e.g. does it happen at 5 am on a Sunday, or is it constant on a Saturday night?. It could also a fault on the feedhorn in the middle of the dish, that is quite a common problem.

I often get this problem, sometimes my TV is simply not watchable for weeks on end (yes, tried retuning and doing all the twiddling). Then all of a sudden it comes good again. I do think that digital is very vulnerable to interference. Motorbikes going back interfere with it as do other vehicles. Bring back analogue….

I had your problem, Ruth, a couple of years back. It wasn't quite continuous but most days there was interference at some point. Then the problem disappeared and it hasn't returned at all. I never worked out the reason for it- this was West Green Road. I agree- too vulnerable to interference
