Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Waitrose Crouch End is to undergo a major makeover almost six years after becoming the retailer’s first ever convenience store in London.

Work will commence this week to extend the shop into the vacant neighbouring unit in order to improve efficiency and provide customers with a more convenient shopping experience. The shop’s sales and back of house area will increase by almost 1,000 sq ft.

The retailer recently received planning permission to carry out minor alterations to the exterior of the corner unit next to the store to make the frontage consistent with its own.

Waitrose has traded out of the former Woolworths unit since October 2009 and has quickly established itself as one of the supermarket’s busiest shops in the capital.

The shop will remain open throughout the works with the exception of Monday 3rd August, and from Monday 24th August to Wednesday 2nd September, to allow finishing touches to be made ahead of the project being completed on Thursday  3rd September.

The design of the shop has been tailored in response to customer feedback and to ensure shoppers can make the most of the services available.

New features will include new bakery counter offering a range of hot foods, more payment points, a larger fresh produce area, a dedicated click and collect point and the introduction of a self serve coffee machine as well as a wider choice of products than ever before.

The improvements to the store will not result in any changes to its existing opening hours or the number of deliveries currently received.

Developers of shopping malls, at least, are keen to secure either Waitrose or M&S - or better, both - as 'anchor' tenants - any chance of similar at the Arena Retail Park. With M&S's planned departure from Wood Green, this side of the tracks is looking a bit less ABC1.
Holloway Road at the Nags Head currently sports both premium retailers - hop on a 29, Osbawn and keep them going?

I have used the 29 bus route at all different times for the last 30 years. I have never had or seen any trouble on it.

Oh come on hob, it's not called the 'fright bus' for nothing. Admittedly the nastiness I've seen and heard about has usually been on a Friday or Saturday night, but the 29 is legendary.

That being said, I have never had any trouble using it to and from trips to Holloway Waitrose.

Maybe I have been lucky, but even years ago coming back late on the weekends from Camden I never saw any trouble. Might be handy if it got a bad reputation though as Ii might be able to get a seat.

Well, I'm glad Iceland managed to get into our Woolworths when they did. Save us from our local obsession with premium retailers to massage our need for an ABC1 demographic image!

I don't feel the need, I just report.

Crouch End needs this expansion like a hole in the head. What will it do to the independent bakers and greengrocers in particular?

Well it's already been there 6 years. People can shop where they please?

This seems to be a very extensive feature about waitrose in crouch end. Agreed, I am very pleased we have an Iceland on this section of green lanes. What is the obsession with ABC1's?

Personally I find Waitress totally overrated but I would welcome an M&S in our hood
