Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Painting skirting board without getting paint on the laminate flooring.

Hey everyone,

So I've managed to lay some laminate flooring in a room and then laid a new skirting board around the whole room so i do no need a thin laminate trim around the old skirting to cover the holes. i wish to paint the new skirting - does anyone know of any products or could offer advice as to how i can paint the skirting without getting paint onto the laminate flooring?

Masking tape?

yeah i thought of this too but because its gloss paint the paint will form a connection with the tape and when you pull the masking tape off it will rip the paint of the skirting too, i think this only works with water based paints, but if theres no other options i may try masking tape and try not to get any paint on the masking tape so that i don't have the problem i just mentioned. Thanks.

If you're madly careless, yes there may be an issue, but if the tape just catches the odd slip there shouldn't be an issue. There is special edege protector tape you can get. If you want belt and braces, double up with a plastic paint shield.

PS: What's the Haringey Council avatar about?

Oh and my Grandfather used to work in the council a long time ago and told me that this is the year that the borough is marking its 50th university so thought i would put it up in support of our borough and its council

Yes true - I tend to worry a lot about things that may happen before they do haha! and perfect thanks! this is exactly what i was looking for, i think it will be better than just normal tape. Thanks

Cheap masking tape is pretty pathetic but I've used Duck Tape with gloss and it's worked really well. You can get it at Homebase. Worth really taking time on getting it accurately lined up to the skirting before you start.

Thanks.

Im a painter and decorator so a tip from me. Mask up the area you wish to protect. Burnish the edge of the tape down with your finger nail or filler blade, to try and prevent bleeding. Paint as required, I'm assuming you'll be using a primer and with two coats on top.
When dry, With a very sharp knife ( snap blade type ) carefully score the joint between the tape and skirting. Then peel the tape off!!!
Then swear a lot as you reveal the bled paint underneath and curse as the masking tape rips leaving small hard to remove bits of tape attached to the laminate. All par for the coarse . Welcome to my world!!!
PS --- NEVER leave masking tape attached to anything (especially not glass) for longer than 36 hours.
One question why are you using gloss?

What would you use instead of gloss, on the most kicked part of all your woodwork?

Eggshell - oil based. Much more forgiving than gloss . You don't get the high shine which shows up all the minor defects in the timber. Dries faster - gloss will stay 'green'/ tacky for 3/4 days eggshell should be recoatable after 24 hours. If you don't paint on really thick coats.
Especially since you can use water based eggshell which is easier to clean using.....just water and no solvent based cleaners!
