That website is an absolute treasure trove as are the brothers that run it, Alan and Ray.

The Oceana Laundry mentioned on that page had a receiving office on Grand Parade at number 30 (now the site of Russian Grocery Store, Cuak). Judging by the photos they were an employer who laid on some fun outings and events for its female staff and their children.

Thanks for the reminder John, I have finally saved it to my favourites!

I agree, it's a great website.

There's more going on in Tottenham than meets the eye. I recently did a mistaken turn into Mill Mead Road, which runs just west of the canal north of Tottnm Hale. There are hundreds of big shed-style warehouses, they can't all be motor repairs and import-export. Some even had the sound of metal-bashing.  Have a little walkaround here.  Also look at that map from above in google earth, the warehouses go on for miles,  way into Hertfordshire.  If I was a go-anywhere unemployed youth, I'd walk this route rather than the High Rd. Someone will be needed to make the tea and sweep up, somewhere.

Others of the warehouse districts eg Fountayne Rd, also make things.

On a vaguely related diversion, post the Scottish referendum, I was wondering how we can get figures of the total GDP of Haringey - all the tax take, both private and business, vs the spend?  Would the independent republic of Haringey be self-sufficient?

I agree about ways of looking for work. Maybe I'd start visiting cafes on the industrial estates and asking around, but it's never been easy to do that sort of thing unless you are fairly outgoing.

The Millmead Industrial Centre has a fine entrance to what appears to be the oldest part, on the East side. It's quite imposing, and interesting inside:- Millmead Business Centre

Also nearby, but on the Lockwood Industrial Park, is Beavertown Brewery Taproom - open Saturdays 12pm-6pm for sampling!
