Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

That time of year again when just as our sunflowers come into glorious bloom, thieves and vandals come and destroy them.

My beautiful sunflower IN MY FRONT GARDEN was torn down and the head removed overnight.

Clearly I am cursing them and their descendants in perpetuity and fantasising medieval style punishments on the off-chance I could have caught them. Let's just say, don't get on my wrong side today...

So if you are one of those lovely folk who grow sunflowers for all to see, be aware that they could be targeted. The price some of us pay for refusing to lose our front gardens to wheelie bins is that from time to time, we lose some of our precious blooms. But it always hurts to lose a sunflower...takes so bloody long to grow them.

And damn them, I won't give up. I'll just grow more next year. a whole bloody row of them (nearer to the house though).

Consoling words and offers of tea and sympathy appreciated

Yes squirrels will destroy sunflowers, as will slugs and snails who eat right through the stems bringing mighty flowers crashing down, but there are not likely to be squirrels around in the front garden where I live. This is more likely to be humans wanting to eat the seeds, which at least makes it theft and not wanton vandalism. That someone might use the seeds is a tiny grain of consolation. A very tiny one.

Squirells eat all the tiny olives off my small tree every year

some give and other b…yards just take and destroy!

So annoying Liz, this is so horrible, pointless vandalism. I curse those people. I'm impressed that you refuse to give up but just keep trying to grow them again. I would have given up. So sorry but if I see anyone damaging any flowers…. well, I shall give them a mouthful. I hope you'd act as character witness!

Oh no that is such a shame. We were admiring the sunflower yesterday Liz on our way to the post office.

Lucky enough to live in a country where vandalism seldom happens, I find it totally beyond my comprehension.  I was going to say it reduces man to the level of animals but that would be insulting animals; at least squirrels don't know any better.  I am so sorry about your sunflower, Liz!

How horrible. I just can't understand this mindset. I have to say, I was always nervous about putting pots etc out front on Salisbury road yet I've had no problems - maybe that suggests the culprits are living very close to you. But my road's a bit more of a thoroughfare so maybe it's less quiet so they don't think they can get away with it as easily.
