Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
wheelie bin disaster
HI everyone I been having a massive problem with my neighbour regarding the wheelie bins,
we move to this house couple of years ago and our top neighbour was already living there, we realise that they are not great fan of recycling and since the local authority / Veolia made this decision of collection once every 15 days it's been just a nightmare.
I will explain, my neighbour can fill both bins in one week so as a result they're left open over a week and with the hot days the small it's just horrendous, now there is maggots all over the bins, to help I did tried to explain them but they English is not good so I think they didn't get it at all. I was thinking with the time they will get there but sadly I was wrong it's even worst this days.
I did try contact Veolia but looks like they are not responsible for that moreover a spoke with the guys on the collection and ask if is possible to send a new ones or at least disinfect the bins, but the show no interest. one day I very nice gentleman rang my bell with the leaflet explain all the procedures for recycling and I was excited about it, but my neighbour did not turn up so I left then on his door, he just ignored everything.
now the situation is getting worst and worst as is maggots everywhere as well as strong smell and I can't even open a window on this hot days, on my everyday life I have to hold my breath to get home . It's a very stressful situation as I don't want to create problems with neighbours but in the other hand I don't want to let him doing the same over and over. I just don't know where should I call for help any suggestions will be much appreciate.

Hi Ruben, it could have been about the 'plastic film' you mentioned, which (clingfilm or top seal for plastic container) isn't recyclable, it's the wrong sort, sorry.
Other 'gotchas' are: plastic wrapping round packs of canned catfood; bubblewrap; polystyrene foam; padded envelopes; aluminized (metallic-looking) plastics e.g. some crisp bags or wrapping 'paper'; even the clear wrapping around greetings cards.

I spent part of my childhood in Trinidad and Tobago, a so-called developing country (used to called 3rd world). Although parts of Port of Spain aren't the cleanest, the refuse collection in town is done every day except Sunday. In the suburbs, 21 km out from POS we lived the refuse was collected 3 times a week!
So twice weekly collection is a backward nonsense to save money disgiuised as a means of encouraging recycling. Many front gardens in Bruce Grove don't have space for very large bins. And there is no coercion on the part of policy makers to deal with the refuse up stream, at source = the producers, packers, transporters and supermarkets/shops. Why has iyt taken so long to bring a hefty bag tax? My granny used to go to market with her containers and her own bags. I keep one with most times I am out and about.
As with the cycling lanes and housing the politicians just don't have what it takes to be foward thinkiing. hey just react to problems and he who shouts loudest or pays the most gets the most.

Out of interest JJ, were the bins in T+T individual for each house, or big collective ones at the roadside? That latter would fit well with daily collection. I've seen this in other places eg Spain, also in Brighton. I keep banging on about this as it seems to me to be a much better solution than cramming precious garden space full of (ugly) bins, and multiplying the task for the binpeople by a factor of dozens. If others ('3rd world' or not) can manage to cross the kerb to dump their rubbish, why can't we? It already happens in blocks of flats, though the bins are contained in the building perimeter not at the roadside.

The bins were very crude and not standardised. I must say I do not know what the situation is now.
But in Paris they collect rubbish every day. You can't leave the bins on the sidewalk. Residential buildings must have arrangements for dealing with the wheelie bins. Then where my mum lives in eastern France there is a problem with dumping of rubbish quite similar to that we have here but on a much smaller scale. It is mostly from people who are not used to the system or do not care about it!

In Barcelona they are standardised. The rubbish lorries only have one person, the loading of the bins is completely mechanised. It dumps them on the side.
You are never further than 50m away from your bin and, if you live in a block of flats, usually the porter will take them down for you (for a small tip at the end of the month).
Then again, nobody lives in the ground floor. I certainly would not like to have a big rubbish container in my doorstep (call me nimby or whatever you want).
It's just a matter of the whole organisation (read lack of) of the city. Same as the 2-way streets that slow down traffic, 33 boroughs with different parking regulations, no cohesive strategy in the city about virtually anything.

Not sure if you are using shared bins? One short term solution might be to get your own bin and fit a padlock to it(fairly easy) Sounds a bit daft but your problem is very real with only the possibility of a resolution.

Hi everyone just a quick update of the situation.
yesterday I decided to clean the bins myself and I bought all the equipment necessary for the full disaffection, so I did spend all evening doing it.
I cleaned all the bins as well as I mark my bins with a door number so my neighbour will understand that he can not take all. also I tried to have a chat with him and once again, I have explained to him how much this is affecting my family life. He was a bit confused but fingers cross he get something
.the reason I decided to give another chance is I don't want to create any kind of hardship with my only neighbour and decided to give another go, now there is no excuse possible if this will continue I will make a formal complain but at least I'm rest ashore that I did everything I could .

The fact that Veolia pretty much immediately abandoned their commitment to collect compost waste can't have helped.
The decision to privatise waste collection in Haringey was criminal. Not to mention almost certainly corrupt.
