Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This is bad news for residents of the Harringay Ladder and Gardens as one of Mr Ozbeks main wants is to increase traffic to the area for the traders on Green Lanes. One of his ideas is to remove the bollards to the Gardens roads and also the traffic calmers on Hermitage Road so that the traders can get more visitors.

I hope we can do something about stopping him.

really? how would it even be possible to increase the amount of traffic on green lanes? it's already jammed solid for hours of the day

Yes it's crazy. But thats exactly what he plans to do.

'However, one aspect has received rather less attention, which is that the new Labour Candidate Ali Özbek has been quoted in the press as wanting the removal of both the bollard that stops through traffic (& through traffic jams) through the Gardens, and the closure in the middle of Hermitage Road that does the same there:

"Ali Özbek of Med - Chem Pharmacy on Green Lanes said that business rates in the area almost equalled rates on Oxford Street. Mr Özbek said “From a business perspective, among the most significant problems of Harringay Green Lanes are the high level of business rates and parking problems.

... In a meeting last month, I informed Tottenham MP David Lammy that in the area we have got 1,000 votes and three major issues.

...The other two matters in the area are the barriers on Hermitage Road as well as St Ann’s Road where customers are not allowed to turn towards Green Lanes. This prevents the area receiving more visitors. Mr Lammy said he would not open the barriers."

From what I've heard Mr Lammy doesn't have the authority to dictate whether the barriers are opened or not as it's a local council issue.

And he has a massive mandate to do this. St Ann's is bigger than just the Harringay Gardens. I'm afraid it's like it or lump it time.

This is not a democratic dictatorship John. Being voted in does not give anyone the right to do as they please.

Well it's the residents who voted him in, no one else. The 60-odd% who didn't bother turning up to vote probably didn't help matters.

It was most likely traders that voted him in. Have you read the quote above where he is boasting about having a 1,000 plus votes. They'd all be traders. He only got 1,400 votes over all.

No, they doorstep and get promises. There was very little split voting, people voted for Labour, not necessarily a local businessman.

I have a feeling that the 60% who didn't vote in St Ann's, Harringay etc. were not going to vote Labour. I have a strong feeling that if we had something like 80% - 90% turnout in most wards, Labour would have not won so many seats

For business people the bottom line is making a profit, Mr Ozbeck makes it crystal clear that he represents the interest of business on Green Lanes and not the residents of St Ann's. The priority for businesses is more punters, more traffic, free parking, removing bollards, opening rat runs, (removing the bus lane?), plus the reduction in business rates. Its also receiving grants of 90% to do up their shop fronts and facades.
Some businesses on Green Lanes are small and are more conscious of the local community, however many own several shops together with large portfolios of houses in the area, their interests are not the interests of the local community.

From what I have read, I couldn't put it better myself!

Well said Maggie. You forget to mention the mountains of litter that the businesses create. They get their

street cleaned every day. The residents streets where all the litter blows down - twice a week if we're lucky! It's an absolute disgrace and the council just don't want to know.
