That is crazy talk. Did you see the results above? Do you remember the fuss we made of the St Ann's candidates legitimacy and just look at those results! It is definitely not in decline from the voter's perspective and after all, isn't that what counts?
Philip, I don't think it's as simple as John McMillan suggests. But nor perhaps are things locally as bleak as you think.
No, I don't mean that Claire Kober will now abandon Tory Policies and start listening to people. Why should she? This election will feed her self-delusions of competence and leadership. But if Kober is again annointed Dear Leader for four years, her large majority poses risks.
There are new faces in the Labour Group. I don't know much about them. Do you?
As John points out, a lot of these people have had to work hard knocking on doors and delivering the leaflets. In the hollowed-out twilight of Party membership and a diseased political system, they are Labour's local election machine. But please don't assume that all of them are right-wingers. Or ideas and values-free and motivated by the chance of a Special Responsibility Allowance, or a turn as Mayor.
The people of Haringey consistently vote in a Labour council for a very good reason. Our borough is overwhelmingly working class and so is comprised of people for whom the public sector is crucial. They know that Labour is the party most committed to protecting it. I also agree that members do not go around knocking on doors for personal gain but for the best of unselfish reasons. My point is that the Labour Party has changed and is not changing back. It has embraced the market, turned its back on the unions, and compromised on every issue of importance. It has carried out war crimes and caused regional instability in the world. It has been hand in glove in introducing the market into health care and diluted our education system and not even squawked when the ConDems simply pushed it further. The rise of UKIP expresses just how disillusioned people are. But the failure of Labour to give any lead in the fight against the erosion of our shared social values has opened the door to the very dangerous forces that UKIP represents. I really wish the Labour Party represented us more, but it doesn't.
I Agree whole heartedly. In the meantime lets hope we have a better calibre of Labour councillors this time round otherwise we are .................
Congratulations to all the wining councillors in all our three wards, in particular to Gina Adamou who clearly has a loyal following.
Congratulations also to the many other candidates for being prepared to take the time stand up for what they believe in.
Finally a big thanks to all those councillors we'll be losing from Harringay and St Ann's wards. David, David, Karen, Nilgun and Zena you work has been appreciated by many. May you enjoy a breather for the next four years.
And thanks to you Hugh for your fair representation of all opinions and your constant updating of events
I think Lydia R and colleagues can be proud to have avoided the wooden spoon by a whisker. Perhaps people don't like their schools being handed over to millionaires and the bedroom tax and cuts to disabled while the rich get richer. Or maybe thats just crazy talk!
It's just crazy talk. And probably harassment as well.
Please turn yourself in at the nearest police station.
If only one Conservative had stood, would s/he have got 631? Just an idea for the three Rs in 2018. But Lydia, I'm sure our few Cons fancy Tory ICONS more than your refreshing brand of iconoclasm.
No OAP, People had 3 votes... so only about 200 voted for 3 Tories. Not 600 for one each. The candidate you mention above didn't bother showing up to the count.
