Can anyone recommend a competent tree surgeon who doesn't charge the earth? I've just been quoted £350 + VAT for half a day's work.

they're the ones who quoted £350.
Well, professionals don't come cheap.
Fair enough; and it may be I have to pay that much (or leave the tree unpruned). But I do want to check first. I don't have £350 readily available.
I don't know of anyone I'd recommend but a word of warning for when you look for someone. Anyone can call themselves a 'tree surgeon' apparently. Trading Standards will tell you it is an unregulated business at the moment. If you go to the Arboricultural Association - www.trees.org.uk - you'll find a register of approved, qualified tree surgeons in the UK. Best place to look, I would say. But properly qualified TSs - who won't hack away indiscriminately at your lovely trees - are bound to cost a bit more than the bloke down the street with a rusty chainsaw!
I had a bloke come round a couple of years ago and after spending less than half an hour cutting back our eucalyptus tree (actually I think my wife said his lad did it" gave me a bill for over two hundred pounds.
"Greenscapes of N4" are very good and very reasonable too.
Thanks; I'll try them.
I know a couple of tree surgeons who will be a lot cheaper! What's the job? Give me a call. Simon
Hi simon, Could you provide me with the contact details too please - A neighbours large Ash needs removing, another neighbour needs an Ivy tree removed and dog roses cut back and I have a couple of Privet bushes that need removing and root ground out and a stump to be ground out too if possible.
Thanks
I know a good gardener who's a qualified tree surgeon. I have no idea what he would quote you, but his rates have seemed reasonable to me. PM me if you want his details.
Wow, sounds like a rip off to me. However, it mainly depends on the job. I had a few problems in my yard last year and these guys helped me a lot. The price was totally fair.
Yup, Imagine since your Twitter stream shows this is your company Pol, "these guys" helped you out a lot. (You tinka we wuza borna yesterday?)
