Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Well, I got it after a Freedom of Information request about Haringey Council's attendance at the MIPIM property conference in Cannes. So, I thought to share with you how busy the Cannes Three were selling Tottenham during those sunny days of March.

I also have the information about the time the Cannes Three were on the French Riviera.

Nick Walkley
The Chief Executive attended the conference from Tuesday 11 March 2014, leaving early on Thursday 13 March 2014 to attend meetings in London.

Lyn Garner, Director of Regeneration, Planning & Development
The Director attended from Tuesday 11 March 2014 to Friday 14 March 2014.

Councillor Alan Strickland
The Cabinet Member for Regeneration & Housing attended from Tuesday 11 March 2014, until Friday 14 March 2014.

"I recognise that, on the whole, the only people allowed to have a view about Tottenham are people who don't live here. Quite obviously, residence in Tottenham completely disqualifies most of us."

This is really not like you. Funnily enough the best people to do this are town planners and architects. Many of the people who have businesses in Tottenham tried to burn them down in 2011. When Sheila made her unwise comment that the riots were the best thing to happen to Tottenham people were too busy being outraged to realise what she mean. Tottenham has the nation's attention. It has the Labour Party's attention.

This is really not like you, John. But then on the TV I didn't actually see Lord and Lady Harris out in the High Road tossing car tyres from the roof of the garage across the street onto the fire at CarpetWrong.

Does anyone really know what Sheila Peacock meant? Does Sheila Peacock know what she meant? I expect Tony Travers - is he Lord Travers? and "Sir" Stuart Lipton know. But they're probably too polite to say.

Whatever physical damage the rioters did, will be nothing compared to the social damage that Claire Kober and her pals have foolishly signed-up to. And John, just in case you were joking, this time I'm not!

Sure, let's trust the planners and architects. We've got Jan Gehl and his team working here, haven't we?

I prefer to make sure that local democracy is safe and transparent and presume that the professionals will do their job properly when watched by politicians who are responsible to the electorate (as opposed to the selectorate). People in Tottenham (and I'm not talking about you) have not participated in the Labour Party to the extent that they should have and are now reaping what they have sown.

I'm sad about what's happening and I think it's not being done right but I think it's inevitable that something will happen.

According to Cllr Strickland's own words the ten council staff were in the room 'dishing out business cards". Though their main work was to sit on the front row and clap n support of the build it high 'changing place' regen agenda.

You realise that as you replace the current residents of Tottenham with professionals priced out of other areas the tube "downstream" will become unusable? Look at the Piccadilly line between Finsbury Park and King's Cross. It will get worse when people stop crossing over to the Victoria line to get to King's Cross faster because they can't get on it. And yes I am making a massive assumption that these "professionals priced out of Stoke Newington and Crouch End" will use the tube more than current residents but I think it's a safe one (if a little distasteful).

Well only if you think that right now, the buses along High Road Tottenham run completely empty from early morning to late at night. And ditto the trains from White Hart Lane, Bruce Grove, Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters.

But then what would Zena and I know about this?  We rely completely on Sheila Peacock to keep us informed on official Mayoral notepaper.

Interesting (long) read on the Heygate Estate in Southwark with some useful observations on who has the power, privilege and money to make things happen in 'public spaces' "and how... they try to avoid this misery being made genuinely public." Clue: it wasn't the displaced residents of the estate.
