High winds tear apart Harringay Passage
12:30am Sat 15/02/14 - high winds cause chaos for Harringay's Passage;
Luckily all is calm on Falkland Rd;

Walked by there this morning and the rubble was still there (plus a few paint cans someone had decided to dump) but the ends of the passage had been blocked off.

At 10ish when the kids and I went to walk through, passage blocked off but no sign of anyone clearing anything or about to. Anyone checked since this morning? David? Karen?

Well, the RAZOR WIRE is straight back up on top of a new fence behind the house in Fairfax Rd which adjoins the Passage, as well as beside the house. It's vicious stuff, potentially hazardous to passers-by and not a pretty sight.

"Using barbed/razor wire and broken glass in order to stop people getting in to your home is not advisable. You are making yourself liable to civil action as you owe a duty of care to ensure that visitors to your property are reasonably safe. Odd as it may seem, you also owe a duty of care to trespassers.
The use of such a preventative measure could also be seen as being detrimental to the neighbourhood.
Using other methods of crime prevention such as trellis fencing and defensible planting is often more effective and pleasant to look at. Trellis fencing is effective because it increases the height of the boundary and it is not usually strong enough to hold an intruder's weight Therefore, they may not want to risk climbing over it, breaking it and making a loud noise.
Prickly plants such as Hawthorne, Poncira, Pyracantha (rapid growth), Rosa rugosa, or any kind of Berberis are an effective obstacle against possible intruders and much more pleasant to look at.

Do you know you assume people have buckets of money, and are profficient garderners, neither which are terms I would use to describe me
My neighbors wall fell down- as someone said an elderly lady on her own, who has been having a nightmare over this and now the worry of easy access for burglers
i recently had work done on my wall which is still upright and yes had barbed wire put up on top of the tressling- i dont care whether it looks tasteful or is viscious to trespassers
i do however care that i live on my own and would be very traumatised if my flat was broken into, as have so many of my very close neighbours whilst I have been living here- Seeing that previosly people have still broken into my garden despite the 6foot wall and tressling along the top - so yes i forked out a lot of money for some barbed wire to add to the picture- it is cat friendly but most definitely not people friendly- mission accomplished
As i have also forked out an awful lot of money for my other 2 fences that have blown done in the last 2months- i will be stuffed if my wall gets blown done in the next storm- fingers crossed
Living on the passage way is easy access for criminals, burgleries are so frequent around here and so yes us home ownwers want to make it as difficult for them to get in as possible
Growing suitable plants takes a long time, and as i said gardening skills
I do however think the council should have been much quicker at putting blocks on the passage ways that had been affected-
I have been led to believe they are actually responsible for our walls-

I am interested that you think the council are responsible for the walls along the passage. I think they should be too. In fact uniform, double width brick walls, that look attractive, all long the passage would be fantastic and I don' think people who live alongside it should have to pay for this.
I completely sympathise with people living alongside the passage, I understand you have a security concern that others do not. However as was pointed out in the post above, you're not supposed to use razor-wire. Not something I imagine the man selling it to you mentioned.

How do you know it wasn't a man John? Nobody complains when MEN are accused of nefarious practices but accuse a woman of selling razor wire.........

I did actually think about it before I typed (not everybody does) and I really, honestly challenge you to find a woman in North London selling razor wire for a living. And I was implicitly complaining of some of the crap that MEN sell WOMEN under the guise of SECURITY.
Personally I would go for trellis, as recommended by Glyn Kelly years ago at an LCSP meeting.

Sorry John but with many years experience in home refurbishments etc, I can assure you that there are many women behind the scenes playing a role in the business and we should ensure that boys and girls growing up do not see roles predetermined by gender. I am hopeful that we shall never see razor wire in our lifetimes again, whether sold by dodgy geezerettes or not......
