Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Harringay's not Harringay after all. It's Official
In trying to get support from our local concilllors to improve the description of our area on Haringey's website Councillor Canver has given a statement on the name of our area:
We've discussed and we have agreed to call the area Harringay Green Lanes and Too much emphasis on Harringay confuses everyone with the borough Haringey and I’m afraid it refers to the Harringay ward and excludes the Gardens and other target areas.
'other target areas' refers to what the map on the main page includes as Harringay that's neither Gardens nor Ladder.
I have written seeking clarification, but as yet have recieved no reply.
So, if people were confused about where Harringay is, perhaps it's no wonder. The Council wants to keep all variants of the name for the Borough. Now maybe, as the councillor says, you're all happy about that. For my money, it's not on.
Almost exactly 100 years ago the Municipal Borough of Hornsey tried to rename our area Haringey. The Harringay Ratepayers' Association mounted a campaign and successfully overturned that nonsense. Perhaps the zealous flame of our forebears no longer burns so brightly..................??

Yesterday as I was walking down Green Lanes from Manor House station, I was struck by a proliferation of orange signs on the lamp posts. Many had large white arrows, some mentioned Sainsburys. I then realised that when I walk to Manor House the signs are still orange but have circling arrows and tell us to turn around. Should we now be known as 'Sainsbury's Village'?
An alternative name for that stretch of Green Lanes could be of course 'Betting Shop Alley' as a very rude friend of mine who now lives in a gentrified part of Hackney refers to it.

On 9 August 2008 at 2:31am John McMullan started a conversation called Haringey Ladder in HoL Navigators.
To try and keep conversation distributed over a minimum number of threads, I've played Big Brother and closed that disucssion to point people over here. Below is John's original comment:
The latest edition of the Haringey people has an interview on page 24 with "Dorothy Murphy" of the "Haringey Ladder". Apoplectic with rage I had to sit down and ask myself why this bothers me. Still sitting but would like some company.

I'm not sure that I'd go as far to say that the issue gets me apoplectic with rage. But the various intentional and accidental efforts to change Harringay's name or remove it do piss me off. If you click on the Harringay Name tag which is on this post you'll see a number of other discussions about the issue. Misspelling is one issue, but the deliberate obliteration of what/where is Harringay is the real issue for me. Before 1965 Harringay ONLY meant roughly the area I define in the map on the front page. And, because of the Stadium and the Arena everyone knew what Harringay was and where we were. Over the last 40 years there has been a persistent and accelerating effort by the Council to strip our area of our name. One reason given to me by a Councillor cabinet member in an email was: Too much emphasis on Harringay confuses everyone with the borough Haringey and I'm afraid it (Harringay) refers to the Harringay ward and excludes the Gardens and other target areas. Harringey snooker club has had some advertising signs put up on the side of the building promoting Haringay Snooker club. I am with John, I don't know why but this still irritates the **** out of me. I feel like buying a two inch red permanent marker and correcting it in the dead of night

Well at least the snooker club could be making a mistake. The thing that p*sses me off about when the council do it is that they are using our money and doing it deliberately.

I never know whether to add it in there or not (28 years later....)
