The struggle our neighbours are engaged in to save a local landmark building. This from Grove Park Road Residents:
I am writing to inform you about an event taking place on Saturday 19th July from 2.00 - 4.00 at Seven Sisters tube station in Tottenham N15
Local residents and traders will be attempting to form a human chain around an entire block which is threatened with demolition in order to make way for yet another cluster of chain stores topped by a tower of private, gated community flats.
Currently the site houses a much loved Latin American indoor market and local shops around the block. The building on the corner is remarkable. We want it restored and used for much needed community purposes.
It seems that all over London (and indeed the whole country) , developers are moving in to trash places of great value to local people. In the current economic climate we are more than likely to end up with a hole in the ground for many years to come – or perhaps empty shops and properties and more buy to let landlords.
Tottenham has been much maligned. This site has the potential to be something we can be really proud of. We are determined to have our voices heard and not to give up. We very much hope that you can report our event.
