Rubbish bins rummager, gain
I've just stopped a woman rummaging through my neighbours bins. She calmly asked 'problem? when I asked her to stop.
And then shrugged her shoulders and walked off saying 'sorry'.
No doubt ours were next. But she's diligently carried on down the rest of the street. Maybe it's just another form of recycling and I should accept it but our bins are not communal on public space as in other countries. It still seems like an invasion of privacy somehow.
I thought it was a good thing when I lived in Bulgaria to see stuff being taken and recycled from the street communal bins. We didn't have our 'own' bins then. But I cant get used to it here. I know this discussion has cropped up many times before.
Perhaps this woman needs the money for whatever good rubbish she can find. And she did say sorry....

It was sad. If I see them again, ill try to communicate with them again. They seemed uneasy being approached.

Maybe they are forced to go out doing this by nasty family or associates just as some children are made to go out begging. Whatever the reason, very sad to see people at their time of life doing this. They are probably afraid of everyone!

I've seen this woman too. I don't really have a problem with it but if I did I would probably try going outside and asking her to stay away from my bins.
I'm no vigilante but some matters you have to take into your own hands folks.

We can indeed ask them not to do this, as I did the other day. But some of them might be aggressive. I don't know what the answer is but perhaps I'll take it up with local councillors and raise it as a community concern or something like that.

Would tend to agree. I don't see them as desperate for food and clothing. It's clearly an organised thing.

Why anyone would risk putting anything with ID in their bin these days is beyond me. No address, no names, and deffo no bank statements. Mine go in the compost via the shredder.

Some people perhaps not that careful. Some may be looking for metal etc. Others for other things. we don't have the facts, only our observations and concerns.

A lady with a Big Trolley actually knocked on my door earlier in the week, asking whether one of my favourite pots (with plant) had been 'thrown out' because it was 'near the bins'. I carefully pointed out to her that everything was quite close to the bins in my garden, because it is a tiny front yard. Then she asked me about some of my neighbours' household junk which set alarm bells ringing...I was sort of impressed to find it still sitting there when I came to check later in the day - she clearly really wanted that pot!
Could she have been one of 'them'? It seemed quite remarkable to be taking the trouble to ask if she could take an item if so...we've had the people who come and rummage through scrap plenty of times (they can smell a refurb a mile off, it seems) but they don't usually even make eye contact...

Interesting development to actually ring your bell about a nice potted plant!
We are getting quite a collection of experiences here about what goes on in people's front gardens/yards re: bins and related.

I glanced over to my CCTV screen this morning to see a LWB transit van pull up with two men inside. They sat there for about 8 minutes then got out and walked straight into my yard as if they had every right to do so and opened my upstairs neighbours bin and proceeded to rip open every bag in there. Then they picked up the bag that was outside the bin and opened that. They didn't take anything. All they'd found was an empty medicine bottle which they put to one side but decided not to take. Then straight back into their van and drove off. They didn't go any where near anybody else's bins.
Maybe Veolia in disguise?

hmm, the undercover bin police maybe, checking that they are putting rubbish/recycling in right bins. But then again, probably not.
Clearly looking for something in particular.

I think the speculation is just as much on your part as ours. Essentially what i'm tying to get across is that people from all walks of life should not just feel free to trespass on other people's property. I don't think i'm alone in that thought. I certainly wouldn't want to walk out of my house in the morning on they way to work and come across someone rifling through my bins and i'm not sure you would either, regardless of what romantic planet you live in.
