Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Harringay's green spaces pick up awards as Haringey's parks scoop a clutch of London in Bloom gongs

Haringey’s picturesque open spaces are officially some of the best in the capital after picking up a clutch of gongs at the London in Bloom Awards and two of them are in Harringay.

Railway Fields (above), in Harringay, managed by The Conservation Volunteers, was named Conservation Area of the Year and Ducketts Common (below) was one of the Haringey winners of a silver gilt award.

Lordship Rec in Tottenham, and Albert Road Rec, in Muswell Hill, both received gold awards - and were among seven green spaces to be recognised at the ceremony, which is London’s premier environmental competition.

The success comes less than two months since the borough picked up a record-breaking 16 Green Flags, making Haringey’s parks the fourth-best in the country.

London in Bloom judges praised the high quality of Haringey Council’s children’s play facilities and Green Gyms in parks, as well as the work done to protect wildlife and biodiversity in the borough - giving Haringey a silver award overall.

They also singled out Lordship Rec for acclaim after its recent £5million makeover, commending the "excellent" new bike track, eco-hub and meadows and the work of "an outstandingly pro-active Friends Group".

Stationers Park in Crouch End, Alexandra Palace and Park, and Tottenham Cemetery (below) were all handed silver gilt awards by the judges, while Wood Green Cemetery took home a silver trophy.

Haringey Council is currently consulting residents on plans to make the borough's open spaces even greener by planting more than 1,000 trees by 2018 (ends 12 October)

Congratulations to the dedication of Parks dept and all the Friends of Parks within borough

To add to this The GRA's Community Garden at Doncaster Gardens off Stanhope Gartdens has yet again won the 'London In Bloom - Its your Neigbourhood Award' for the 6th time running with an Outstanding level. This is really hard work to acheive this kind of level. The month before we again picked up the Green Flag Community Award, All these awards help contribute towards the Boroughs In Bloom points, as they visited the Community Garden when the Borough inspections are carried out by the In Bloom Team.

Andy - Community Garden Co-ordinator

Thanks Liz for highlighting! Really heartening stuff and we are very proud at Railway Fields. Missed out seems to be the RHS London in Bloom Award I heard  won by the Gardens Residents Association for their wonderful community garden.

Yes, you can blame the council press release for that omission which I took all this info from. You might want to have a word with them Andy.
