I've just stopped a woman rummaging through my neighbours bins. She calmly asked 'problem? when I asked her to stop.
And then shrugged her shoulders and walked off saying 'sorry'.
No doubt ours were next. But she's diligently carried on down the rest of the street. Maybe it's just another form of recycling and I should accept it but our bins are not communal on public space as in other countries. It still seems like an invasion of privacy somehow.
I thought it was a good thing when I lived in Bulgaria to see stuff being taken and recycled from the street communal bins. We didn't have our 'own' bins then. But I cant get used to it here. I know this discussion has cropped up many times before.
Perhaps this woman needs the money for whatever good rubbish she can find. And she did say sorry....

possible problems -
- ID theft.
- Having the time to have a good look round from inside the boundary. The screening that blocks the view through our side passage was mysteriously damaged this year, and we have a lot of bin divers. Coincidence?
I know it's a bit sad but I'm going to install a front gate, as that underlines the idea of that boundary, and it will make a noise.
I worry about ID theft though I shred things.
I also worry about unwanted attention from inside my yard. There are several things to be worried about really. Plus the rummagers tend to leave a mess and there is enough of that as it is.
Good luck to her? What?
Do you ever throw away personal details ie. receipts, account details etc? Not to mention the fact that she is infringing on someone else's property. Silly response
No I dont throw personal details in the bin Joe, that WOULD be silly. I just think that if she needs to rummage in bins, probably for scrap metal it is probably for her and her family's survival.
I do not believe this is about survival- they are probably not starving and homeless. I haven't got proof of that but if some have vans and seem organised, the motives are not to stave off death from hunger and the elements. Maybe they want to make some money on the side, some extra cash for living and to raise their standard of life but I doubt these folk are close to going under.
Oh well in that case, GOOD LUCK to her. I'll invite her round for a rummage. I'm sure she'll be respectful and leave the entrance to my house I worked hard for in a lovely state.
I think we do care otherwise we wouldn't all be posting. There are indeed vulnerable women out there and we don't know exactly what's going on but we are not really in the position to do all the research and find out. Many things going on around us are out of our control such as crime, including low level stuff, prostitution, etc. I would like to see the authorities doing some work here to find out what are the links, if any, between these things.
People care about what's going on around them and why especially when it's literally in their backyard.
I agree - I wouldn't want someone going through my bins either.
Perhaps an over-generalisation to say 'traditional eastern European clothing'! There are at least a dozen countries in that part of the world with very varied traditions and clothing as well as languages. My Bulgarian friends would be horrified to be confused with Romanians and vice versa!
Mostly now the tradition is jeans or shell suits, trackies, that type of thing. And hi viz jackets...
