Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

until recently, we've been reasonably free from fly tippers here, largely thanks to 'good neighbour' groups but, a few days ago, a bed was dumped in Avenue Road and a shelf unit was dumped in Stanhope Road - the perpetrators should note the latter would have been welcomed by one of the charity shops almost all of whom are grateful for smaller items of furniture; some are open every day of the week.
our problem is that our neighbour uses our bins as she 'doesn't want them on hers!

We have a problem with fly tipping in the Miltons enclave but I noticed with recent road closures due to works on Hornsey Lane it has ceased. This makes me suspicious that the culprits are probably not residents but someone driving through and dumping!

Absolutely Christopher. Beware the bloke with the van who says he'll get rid of your rubbish for a fiver. Goes straight on to the street around the corner. But there are still real problems with local tipping. It seems that whenever tenants change in an HMO, the old mattresses go on to the street, or in our case, against the lovely planters on Warham Road.

The problem of dumping on Warham dropped considerably when we put the planters in though. Before they were installed, I reported rubbish there every day. Now it is a rarity and often not big things like mattresses but extra bags and assorted crap added to a forgotten purple bag (don't get me started).
Most of the time I believe rubbish is dumped from cars. One night I was up working v late when I heard a car draw up. What attracted my attention was the sound of young children's voices shouting. Being after midnight, I was a bit concerned so went out to see why smalls were out on a school night. I didn't find a car but instead there was a manky mattress lying on the street. A midnight jaunt to dump rubbish. No wonder the kids were excited.
I often walk up the Passage during the week. On some days, each road by the Passage has household rubbish/broken furniture tipped on it. Why would several houses at once choose to tip on the same night? My guess is that this is one van driving around and depositing one bit of rubbish at each spot. Spreading the load as it were. Thoughtful.
At my end of the street, neighbours who tip don't bother walking it up the road. They just leave it outside their house. Reporting this seems to do little good. All they have to say is that it isn't theirs and there's nowt to be done without proof. Some days there's nothing for it but to don the marigolds and pick up a spilt bag of rubbish yourself. It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it.

Liz i admire you for not getting mad and simply dealing with things with a mature balanced attitude. You are a lesson to us all.
