Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
How lucky you are
I am an ex-Harringay resident who now lives in Cornwall. Yes it is very nice to live down here even in sad weather (like now), but, although we do have fund raising and carnivals, they do not seem anything like as good and organized as yours.
Also this web site to me is a marvel. So well run and easy to navigate.
If anyone is thinking of moving away from central London, think twice, yes we have a few advantages, but on the balance I think you win.

Yes Ranger, I know what you mean. In St. Austell (where I live) you are exposed to the elements of the neighbourhood, like it or not. On the reverse, as you say, in London you can keep your own identity. Looks like I am beginning to miss London more than I thought!

Yes love this phrase. I too love the remoter islands of Scotland but am always glad to be back! The light classics played at some tube stations are a bizarre trait. I wonder who orders them and why they are only at certain stations!

The music deters youths from hanging around the station. Apparently the uncoolness of listening to classical music is stronger than the lure of hanging around a tube station. The Newcastle metro used to do the same thing in the nineties, probably still does. I assume the stations it is played are the ones where groups of youths have caused problems.

Hi Roy, as a Janner I sometimes feel homesick for the sea and really yearn for a natural horizon, its funny what you miss. I have lived 'up the line' in Haringey/ Harringay, more years than not and I am split between the two. I sometimes dream of a little cottage by the sea to watch the boats go by, but I still get a buzz from "the sweet smell of misadventure and anonymous freedom" (thanks Ranger!) when I return as I do enjoy a bit of mayhem. So every few months I go down to breath in the air and 'suck in' the scenery and that tides me over 'till the next time.

Yes Maggie, looks like I am the same only the other way round. The one big thing I miss most is Ronnie Scott's Jazz club. Not that that is of any interest to most people, but thought I would just mention it!

I've had some good times at Ronnie Scotts and the old 100 Club, though in common with many people who like living in London because of the theatre, the concerts, the music etc I don't actually go too often, if at all, so you've reminded me to make the effort.

I like such a wide range of music and theatre, so my missing London I think is magnified.
These brief postings we have had, has made me think along the lines of "make the most of what you have". So I am off to Fowey (15 minute drive) this evening to watch the cutting of the pasty.

I've just come back from the Isle of Wight and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the countryside and coastline. But if I lived there I would soon find that I knew every tree and blade of grass, every field and river, so that in the end I would find it pointless to go anywhere as I'd already seen it all. (and yes, I'm aware of the changes of weather and seasons that alter what you can see but I would hate to ride some of those roads in the winter.)
I'm too old to change now. Health wise I need to be near those facilities and to have access to the wide selection of travel options that we have.
