Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Siskins in N15?
We are pretty sure it was a siskin we saw when we were walking along Etherley Road yesterday afternoon. It was swooping through the front gardens. My husband had seen it and heard it earlier in the week. Can anyone else confirm such a sighting?

Interesting.. I've not seen any in the area although I believe greenfinches are certainly around.. but will ask a man who will have a better idea than me...!

He asked if you were sure it wasn't a greenfinch! :)
He also asked for a description. Can you describe the bird's size, plumage, behaviour and / or call (if heard)?

This bird had a black cap, bright yellow chest fading to pale yellow belly. Wings were like a pied wagtail; black with white striped underneath. Song, heard by my husband, was described as similar to a sparrow. he reckoned the sound of the siskin on the RSPB site was the one he heard.

I agree that doesn't sound like a greenfinch! The black cap is particularly interesting. I will relay the description to my expert friend (who lives in N10) and also pay a visit to Etherley Road tomorrow morning!

It was swooping through the front gardens from the corner with Cranleigh down the odd numbers to 29, when we had to leave it. It really DID look like a siskin

I saw two with this description in my garden the other day and couldn't identify them. I get greenfinches and goldfinches regularly. The birds I saw were very very small though, the size of a wren. They weren't blackcaps. Are siskins smaller than greenfinches.
