Giving Blood
I received an email today about a campaign to increase the number of Blood Donors in the UK, apparently they are struggling to get enough donations.
I have always said I would do it, and my pathological fear of needles has always got in the way, but this time I will try to get over it!
From the email I just got...
"We’ve launched a campaign to recruit 100 thousand donors in 100 days: a campaign we hope you might support. Blood donation is straightforward and absolutely essential to save the lives of thousands of people every year. You can become a blood donor at the web site http://www.blood.co.uk/ or by calling us on 0300 123 23 23."

I give blood but they don't half make it complicated to get an appointment.
I regularly get texts telling they are very low and urgently need supplies and asking if I could come to a particular session held that week. When I phone up to book a slot at that session, they are without exception, always full but I could come in, wait around and get a drop in appointment. Like most people, I have a job, so waiting around until they have space to take me is not an option - a full donation plus recovery time already takes an hour.
I also don't understand why the sessions are almost always 10am to 3pm or 4pm. If they held evening, early morning and weekend sessions, it would be much easier for most of the population to go.
Anyway, rant over. I just ignore their immediate appeals now and book a slot three months ahead in order to get a slot that fits in with my working hours.
Everyone who would like to one day receive blood should give it if they are able to. It's not scary, it doesn't hurt and you get free biscuits.

Yes I get put off by the odd sessions and dates. I've decided to go instead to the central London venue WEST END DONOR CENTRE 26 MARGARET STREET W1W 8NB which is close to Oxford Circus station. It's open till 7.30 most days. Of course it's easy for me with my delicious Freedom Pass.

Nor mine because I had a transfusion myself in the days before they tested the blood for various things like HiV and HepC. So no way of returning the favour.

Can't they test for those now? I'd want to know. Do they take blood if there is a risk but use it for other things? - or maybe it's got more selective. It used to be that they got most donations from the military (easy to organise) and if a male donor was singled out in the interview not to give because eg they had sex with men it would be a bit obvious to their colleagues, so in the antediluvian days before it all went legal, they would take the blood anyway and mark it for experimental uses.

I'm sure they do run tests, but if you're connected to a 'risk category' they won't let you donate in the first place. I'm also a stone 'underweight' for donating because they take a one-size fits all approach, which means a lot of naturally small women will simply never be able to donate!

If you have had a transfusion since 1980 something, you can't give blood at present due to CJD being hard or impossible to screen for. Something like that - was reading the pamphlet late last week when my wife had to have a transfusion.

Not so much risky as frisky -keeps thinking s/he's being lined up for the 2.10 at Newmarket: Ferritin's Lad/Lass at 11/2.

I only recently started giving blood (over the last 12 months) and go to Hornsey Parish Church. I agree, it is often tricky to get an appointment that suits but I go in the evenings and then when you are actually giving blood, you make your next appointment for six months time : )

They also have regular sessions at St.John Vianney church hall on West Green Road.The next one is due in March.The last session is 7.30 pm and you make your next appointment before leaving.Its very easy.

Used to be a regular blood doner but the service still doesn't want blood from gay men.
