Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I received an email about these maps today from a Crouch End shop. I guess they just really weren't meant for sale this side of the tracks, eh. Alongside each map below, I've reproduced a thumbnail showing the actual postcode areas. The N4 version seems the most 'individual' of the two. Notice how Finsbury Park is at the centre of the real map and tacked on as a shuddersome afterthought to the artist' version. Fascinating social commentary.

Oh.  Oh dear.

Just remind them Hugh that in the beginning there was Harringay (certainly there was South Harringay), and only after the builders rested and admired their mighty works did they cast their attentions west towards the plains that were Crouch End! We have the map to prove it...

Did you say these were for sale? For money? I'm afraid I wouldn't want them on the wall even if Harringay were slap bang in the middle. They look like a primary school geography project. If this is what sells in CE, I best put the kids to work tomorrow.

Hi Hugh,

Finsbury Park has not been  tacked on. I was commisioned to make a map of Stroud Green and actually given the map as a base in order to collage on top of. It really is not a social commetary at all it's just supposed to be some fun illustrations of Stroud Green and Crouch End.

And yes, they do sell thanks very much!

Lucy

Thanks for dropping by to comment Lucy. As maps of Stroud Green and Crouch End, the maps make make more sense. I was reacting to them as labelled, as maps of "N4" and "N8". No disrespect meant to you as an artist. I'm quite sure that you did as commissioned. I'm just having a little tongue in cheek fun. Given the wide geographic readership of HoL, you may find you get a few sales off this post!

No worries Hugh. If it's any conselation, I live off Green Lanes and have been left off the map!

It's more upsetting reading the comment that lady made when you're just trying to make a living doing something you love. Ironicaly my non commercial work are big moody oil paintings!

Sorry Lucy, take no notice of me. I'm probably a bit more of a moody oil painting sort of woman.

I wasn't intending to upset anyone with my ill-informed opinions on what constitutes art. What do I know? Plenty of people will enjoy your work and write me off as a ridiculous old fuddy duddy. Which I  am.

Hey no worries, it's all just personal taste really isn't it.

I thought it was really cool - was going to comment on this yesterday (and also point out that I wouldn't expect a piece of art like this to be 100% Ordnance Survey accurate) but unfortunately I had actual work to do. It seems like nobody in London can agree on where areas begin and end anyway

Thanks! I did actually consider posting a link to an OS site.

By way of an apology for any discomfort caused and to support a Harringay based artist, we tweeted for you (ahem, directing people straight to the Frameworks website!).

There ya go, just got retweeted by @CrouchEnd and @Crouch_End - that'll be a potential audience of about 10K....yoops and as we speak @HornseyAgencies has picked it up too. Seems like it may roll a bit. Hope it helps!
