Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As a result of all the chat here on the Premier Electric and following Alistair's interesting discovery that the 1910 cinema is still there behind the art deco facade, I've written a note to the Tottenham Civic Society asking for advice on what we can do to save the Premier Electric.

I noticed today that a simillar cinema in Harwich is Grade II listed and supported by the likes of Clive Owen.

Ok, so the Harwich cinema hasn't been art deco'd or Quasar'd, but perhaps that makes ours all the more interesting. A real tableau of the story of the rise and fall of 20th Century cinema.

It must surely be worth saving.

Or am I just lost in the past again.

Good idea. Would be useful to know who owns it at the moment as well.
It would be a shame not to try.
I am inclined to say forget it, no way are those god botherers going to give it up. They have even painted it my favourite shade of beige. We could just join up to their church and be saved ourselves.
I don't think anyone's yet a the stage of planning - just some blue-sky thinking.

In that vein, it could be that the premises are leased. It could be that if the building were listed in some way it might make a diference to their decision to stay/go. Ne'er say ne'er.
They have a persecution complex as it is...
John, let's leave the current occupiers out of it. :)
It is certainly worth preserving every decent building left in Haringey but very difficult with the tactics of this council. Last summer however there was a walk in Wood Green which finished with a talk at Bruce Castle. I'm not sure which organisation was responsible for the walk but I think it may have been a Council Dept. We were allowed inside the Cinema and the Church organisers are restoring the building and English Heritage was mentioned. They are taking out the partitions etc. which were put up when it was used as a Bingo Hall and seemed to be doing an OK job. English Heritage has just informed the Council that knocking down Ward's Corner would be unjustified. So anything is worth a try
That's very reassuring. I think the partitions were put up because the ceiling was badly damaged when it was used as a Quasar venue in the nineties.
Sounds to me like the church are serious about staying and are skilled at knowing where to get funding, which is going into preservation of the building.

Therefore I'd suggest if people are serious about finding a site for our community focus we'll need to look elsewhere.
