Tags for Forum Posts: new recycling bins, veolia, veolia missed collections
Our wheelie bin hasn't been emptied since we received it over 2 weeks ago, I can't get the lid down any more.
Just got off the phone from Veolia - apparently we "weren't supposed to use the large wheelie bins until this week" which was news to me, the only information I was aware of was that they wouldn't be collecting the green boxes any more (so what were we supposed to do then?).
Anyway he confirmed that the first collection was supposed to happen today but they're running behind schedule (due to everyone's recycling overflowing I would imagine) so it may be later today or tomorrow.
I'm on Seymour Road by the way.
You are absolutely right Liz, tongue in cheek remarks like that don’t help – the intention was not to offend. However, I won’t apologise for providing challenge where I think it is needed.
Recognising there is a problem is the first step to tackling it and tit for tat responses don’t help – residents just want to see us get the job done.
You can rest assured that I take this very, very seriously. I agree with many of the points you have made and I am also passionate about increasing recycling in the borough. I personally have been recycling for years and years even back in the days when the only way to do it was to haul it all up to the supermarket recycling containers every week.
Your final paragraph is one that I also put to the cabinet member and I look forward to the response here but I will of course be following that up outside of this forum.
For the record Cllr Schmitz and I asked at the last Area Committee that the date for roll out be pushed back so that problems in the west of the borough could addressed and ironed out before phase 2 hit our area because we, like many residents, could predicted that the makeup of Harringay ward would make it a harder job to get right.
It’s week one and yes there are problems but its our job as your elected members to work towards getting it right – we will continue to do this.
Hi Katy, yes unfortunately there are 19 outstanding roads that Veolia has to complete the collection tomorrow. This includes Seymour, Hewitt and Warham roads in Harringay ward. As you have rightly quoted as people have been using their recycling bins in the last two weeks the number of trips that Veolia had to make to the incinerator were much more than they anticipated. This has inevitably slowed them down. There is a significant learning here that for phase 3 we have to ensure that there is a large print on the bin that advertises the use date. Thank you for your patience.
Trips to the incinerator? For the re-cycling? Mistake?
Sorry John, i should have clarified that they take them to materials recycling facility (MRF) near to the incinerator.
I hope I am wrong but I would hazard a guess that a lot of the collection was contaminated with non-recyclable material. Maybe the incinerator might be the best destination.
After Area Assembly where we encouraged to report problem properties to them, I emailed Veolia about a house on my road at Enquiries.Haringey@veolia.co.uk to request a visit from the recycling engagement team to the house in question as their bins are always overflowing and their green bin stands by shiny and unused. I did it that way as I think if one asks for missed collection response, they probably don't also pass the info onto the engagement team. I did get a response but whether they will visit, I can't say. I'm guess I'll have to wait and see if there's any change.
