This is Erik (blue tabby) and Sookie (tortoise shell). They have been with me since November 2010. They came to me as 8 month old kittens. Very scared kittens. They had a rough start in life, as they were found on a building site with their four siblings, with their mother nowhere to be seen. They were taken in by Celia Hammond Animal Trust, and I decided to adopt two of them.
They are nervous cats who do not trust people easily, which is understandable given their start in life. See photo for story and the whole litter.
After careful deliberation I have decided that I am unable to give them the home they need and deserve. I am not home enough to give them the attention and interaction they need to feel 100% comfortable around humans. I also do not live on my own, and they seem to respond a lot better to women than they do to men.
I have seen a few cracks in their armour in the time I have had them with me, which is enormously rewarding, but I do not have the time needed to bring these two completely out of their shells, and it’s not fair on either of us. With the right home and patience they will be absolutely lovely cats. And you can see for yourself how beautiful they are.
Erik and Sookie would love to live with a female or two, in a calm, quiet household with no other pets or children. They need to have access to a garden, and absolutely need a cat flap. They know how to use a scratching post and a litter tray, and have impeccable manners when it comes to not scratching the furniture! They are neutered, with all vaccinations and treatments up to date.
I really do not want to put them through the trauma of being at rescue centre again, so it would be amazing if they could be spared that and go straight to their new home.
Any new home is subject to an inspection and approval from CHAT.
Any questions, please PM me, happy to answer whatever. This is not an easy thing to do, I have thought about it long and hard. I do love these two dearly as anyone who know me can confirm, but I am not the best place for them to be, and I want what’s best for them.
Boo - would have loved to give them a home, but with a cat, child, some bloke that keeps hanging around the house and no cat flap I don't think they'd be very happy. Lots of luck rehoming them though.
hopefully someone will see this and decide to give these two a new home..
They are 2 lovely cats! I appreciate I don't know you Anette, but I can tell from reading your posts on this site that you are a great cat owner who is clearly an expert on the needs of cats. I am sure it will be difficult to find a home for them as good as yours! It must have been a very hard decision for you. I am sorry I cannot help as I have 6 rescue cats myself and there's no room for any more unfortunately! I do hope you are able to find a good home for them. There do seem to be a lot of animal lovers around here.
Thank you Justine. That's nice to hear. I do feel like a bit of a failure for not being able to provide these two with what they clearly need, and I'm far from an expert! Thank you for your kind words, and I do hope someone comes forward and can take these two. They've got great potential, I just can't seem to coax that out of them..
I am in touch with the two ladies who has the other 4 cats from this litter, and they're doing much better - so it's pretty obvious this is not their perfect home.
Anyone want to consider these two? I really do not want to send them back to the rescue home!!!
Anette - We lost our cat to cancer recently (we had her from a kitten, 18 years). We would happily take these two, but we don't have a proper garden. If the cats could adapt to being indoor cats, we could consider it. We're home all the time, don't have kids (well, we have one but he is 26 and has his own place...<g>).
Hi Christopher, I'm really sorry to hear that, it's so hard when that happens.
As much as I would love for them to go to you, I cannot let them be indoor cats. They outdoors is their sanctuary, where they go when they feel scared (which is a lot!), and they absolutely need access to the outdoors. Thank you for offering, but I don't think that would work out for either of you, unfortunately.
I really hope you find a home for these cats and would take them on myself my 2 siblings would hate it and vise versa
Anette - I think you're right. If the cats need a garden as a quiet place to retreat to when they are frightened, they would need to access the back garden. As we are on the first and second floors (our front door and small hallway are on the ground floor, giving onto the front garden), we don't have direct access to the back garden. I even thought about putting a cat flap in the rear wall of the kitchen and a ramp going down to the back garden, but that is a bit beyond us at the moment, even though I know the chap who lives downstairs would have no problem with that. Good luck in finding a home for these lovely little kitties.
Have you managed to find them a home yet Anette? I hope so, bless them.
No, I had to take them back to Celia Hammond, so now they're stuck there until they're re-homed. I'm gutted I had to do that and could not find anyone to take them.
I am really sorry to hear that. Poor little things! I do hope they're not stuck in the rescue centre for months through the summer. Do let us know if they find a nice home as it's always good to hear a happy ending. You did your best for them. I am a big fan of people like you who rescue cats and you gave them a good home when they needed it.
