This week's planning applications list shows that the march of the double-shop 'Turkish' is continuing along Green Lanes. This time Gaziantep are spreading next door and into Wilson's Laundmatic.

Oh no, please not C&G Gas. I've used them for years - always reliable and efficient. I hope they're going to continue the business locally even if they don't have a shopfront. Anyone know?

I am going in shortly to ask them ... I really hope they not closing completely. Need the down to earth advice they offer freely let alone the things they can sell and install.

I just went in and had a nice chat with the guy who runs/ owns C&G Gas. I think he was quite touched that people round here were upset though were going but it's hard to make a living renting out that space and keeping on staff etc..
They will be moving up to Enfield not in a shop but as a business, under a different name but probably keeping old contact numbers, he will let me know all contact details soon so will post them here.
They will also put up a sign on window about contact details. So we wont be able to go to a shop but they will still be offering their services and someone at the end of the phone. People will be able to order cookers etc from a catalogue online and then phone in or do online order.
I even bought a cooker whilst in there! Mine is getting old and they have some bargains now in clearance sale so thought I'd get one while they were still there and going cheap.He mentioned Baldwins the butchers and apparently they will be closing soon too according to his information... They only have two busy periods a year (guess when!) so cant make much of a living either.
What next? Mertotex? Disneys? Zehphy dry cleaners and shoe repairs?

Baldwins! That is an absolute disaster. They sell such high quality stuff and things that are really difficult to get elsewhere (decent game and wild rabbit).
Maybe it's about time to ask Haringey to look again at their policy to allow change of use to A3 on Green Lanes to stop so many shops turning into restaurants and retain a decent mix. Any views Councillors?

That can't be right re Baldwins. Agree with Michael, it would be an absolute tragedy. Best butchers in Haringey, if not North London. And it's only a few years since they moved into that bigger unit from the smaller one a few doors down. Every time I go into there, they're really busy (admittedly at the weekends) with plenty staff on duty. Plus the meat is not only better quality but it's cheaper than the supermarket too. Please say it ain't so.

Well, it's what the guy in the gas shop told me and he was told by someone so it could be a horrible rumour and I hope it is.
Best go in and ask them maybe. Having plenty of staff on duty of course costs money as well as the rates and overheads. Green Lanes clearly not a cheap place to be running a business.

You are right Michael. This is getting out of order so many long established shops and services suddenly going or becoming smaller scale (eg. laundrette) The problem is the rents and rates- the council would need to bring these down and I doubt they will be doing that in the near future. I guess that what we see happening along Green Lanes is repeated all over the country but in other places, the shops just get boarded up or become charity shops. Here the thriving Turkish restaurants can move in. The council can still get their rates/taxes and I suppose that has some positive value but not sure ... I just would like more 'proper' shops along the Lanes.
And yes, any comments from councillors?
I wonder what the older people in the neighbourhood are making of all this. They won't be all able to go online to do stuff and will miss the personal contact with shop keepers.

It's interesting that Crouch End, despite the glut of clothes shops, restaurants, bakeries and pricey supermarkets, also has more of the small locally useful businesses than we have on GL: a very good ironmongers (the sort where you can buy one screw of the exact length you need); an electrical shop; a stationers (yes I know we have Maqsood but they have a limited range); also a good butcher, fishmonger, greengrocer.
I'll add my voice to those who will miss CGGas - had several boilers and cookers from them over the years and always extremely helpful.

I just posted a reply to Karen Alexander's post to do with the parking charge review, which has an impact on this topic as if we want to keep our shops we need to find a way to attract customers.
We need to remember that business rates are not set by the council (they are set nationally) and that the rents are set commercially by the landlords.
I was told by Rob from the Traders that one of the reasons we do not get many new retail units on Green Lanes is that the shops are very big (commercial rents are charged per square foot or metre) and thus the rents are too high for many start-up retail businesses. I think that the shops in Crouch End are much smaller and so affordable to small specialist outlets.
And I really hope that Baldwins doesn't go... Keep on shopping there folks!
