Hmm. Where do they do their research on what would work in a given location? I think a Waitrose or a mini Selfridges would be heaving :P

I'm sure Poundland are just as scrupulous about sourcing their goods from workers who are paid a decent rate as Peacocks was. Did anyone really think that their £2.99 fleece came from people earning at least the minimum wage and less than a 16 hour day?

I get that people like pound shops for cheap bits and bobs and essentials, but there are plenty of them around and personally I think it's a great shame we're getting another. Not just because it's a wasted opportunity for something different, but also because it finally seals the demographic for the Arena Park as thoroughly downmarket. Retailers with any pretensions to quality won't look twice at it with this kind of neighbour. Not that the sports shop (great cheap running socks) was doing it any favours.

I totally agree Rosyrose. It's a wasted opportunity to provide something we don't have around here and something more upmarket. It doesn't have to be Selfridges or Waitrose but I think there are plenty of people in Harringay who are eager to shop at somewhere that isn't a grocery store/hardware shop...

Big box grocery supermarkets like the Sainsburys at Williamson Road are on the way out. More and more people don't do a "weekly shop" at such places, they do it online and get it delivered. Then they top up in small local shops (including of course "locals" from the supermarket chains). So, when that "big box" ceases to be viable, and Sainsburys close it down, think of all the opportunities that presents. Hey, we could even knock it all down and put up a greyhound stadium!

Ah but, if they move to online only, won't that turn the Williamson Road store into one big distribution warehouse?

Possibly .... But I think they will need a site with much better access by road for delivery lorries, vans etc. Look at the location for similar centres, or for delivery companies like DHL - they're all out on industrial estates near the M25, or the North Circular. Also, land prices are much lower out there. And they could get a lot for the Williamson Road site, not, of course for a greyhound stadium (my little joke) but certainly for housing, especially high-density.
