Snow Forecast - 5 February. Council Gritting Information
Snow is forecast in London for Sunday evening and overnight (5/6 February.)
Cllr Nilgun Canver sent all councillors an email on Friday 3 February. She listed actions planned by the Council and promised an update this afternoon (Saturday) which hasn't yet arrived. Here's what Nilgun sent.
- Pavement gritting
"Pavement Priority 1 (Town Centre) gritting will be carried out on Saturday morning 4.2.12. This work will be undertaken by the Saturday morning sweeping shift so roads scheduled to be swept on Saturdays may not receive the usual sweep."
"Pavement Priority 1B (bus stops, crossings, outside public buildings etc on main roads outside town centres) gritting will be carried out on Saturday morning 4.2.12."
"Pavement Priority 2 (schools) no action planned as yet. May require gritting on Sunday 5.2.12 ready for school on Monday 6.2.12, depending on what snow fall actually happens."
- Carriageway gritting
"Review weather forecast midday Saturday 4.2.12 to determine the need for and timing of carriageway gritting based on updated forecast."
- Homes for Haringey (HfH)
"HfH has requested gritting on estate pavements and carriageways on Saturday morning 4.2.12. Veolia has been asked to carry out this work and again there will be an impact on cleanliness of estates due for Saturday morning sweep."
"Details of the pavements and carriageways to be gritted can be viewed on lists and maps on the web-site. A further update will be provided tomorrow afternoon."

Thanks Alan, I was wondering about this earlier today.
But I still don't understand why Harringay Passage is categorised as Priority 2, it has a lot of foot traffic!
Also, there's no snow forecast for the 5th & 6th (at the moment, at least) but there could very well be problems with icy conditions as from tomorrow morning.

Entirely my fault Angela. I read it wrong and didn't do the basics and cross-check the met office website. Please accept my grovelling apologies.
Luckily Veolia's gritters and Haringey staff got it right. I'm sure you did too if you followed the TV/radio forecast late this afternoon and this evening.

Incidentally, if tomorrow is dry and the temperature not too low, people may want to experiment with kitchen salt. Last year I found a surprisingly tiny sprinkling produced a satisfying cracking and disappearance of the snow outside our and our neighbours' homes. But then we live in the Far East of Tottenham.

No problem Alan. I will contact Cllr Canver re the passage as you suggest.
Apparently dishwasher salt and cat litter are also effective wrt to ice! Also wearing a pair of socks (preferably old woolley ones) over your shoes helps prevent slipping on ice (an elderly neighbour of ours does this)

Good work on the pavements, I saw lots of workers on the junction of Wightman and Turnpike Lane.
Are the roads getting done? I thought Cavendish Road was one of the priority roads, but it hasn't been done. I have done a bit, to get people over the speed humps as this is where they usually lose momentum and start hitting residents' cars. Haven't got enough for the whole road though!

Snow warning. Midnight- Saturday night. Avoid Warham Road. At present a car is stranded in the middle unable to go up or down, others are skidding. Don't know if it was gritted.

Okay.........just driven from Kentish Town to Wightman Road via Holloway. No evidence of gritting on Islington or Haringey roads. The lights at the top of Burgoyne, junction of Wightman are causing lots of problems particularly as your car can't get purchase after stopping at lights. Have had to leave my car near Jewsons and walk to Cavendish.
On a light note I saw someone make a snow angel in the forecourt of the church!!
