Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Public Firework Displays for Haringey
With the demise of Ally Pally fireworks display and the Primrose Hill & Highbury Fields events now just distant memories, north London now seems ill-served with public fireworks displays. The only large organised events I've been able to dig up nearby so far are:
Enfield Town Park

Central London
And if going more local doesn't suit, try the Lord Mayor's Fireworks after the Lord Mayor's Show on Saturday 12th November. The fireworks display is at 5pm from a barge moored between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges. You can watch from the banks or grab a prime position on one of the bridges.
It's difficult to believe that there aren't some smaller public events organised by community organisations. Know of any?

It's ironic that it's so expensive to put on local firework displays that are safe and well managed because of various regulations and insurance issues, yet any person with very little sense can let off fireworks all over the place at any time to the annoyance and danger of the public. (And with much stress to animals)

Note that The Lord Mayor's Fireworks are on Saturday 12th November, not on Bonfire Night.

I couldn't disagree with the decision by the AP Trust Board in July of last year, led by Pat Egan, to cancel the longstanding fireworks event. The £100,000 cost came from our charitable trust's funds, which by and large means taxes and the rates and all for the sake of 30 minutes entertainment once a year.
There are greater priorities at our Charity's main asset.

So could the fireworks be revived it it broke even or does the Trust need to see a profit to recoup some of the previous losses?

£100,000 topline. Were some costs not offset by rental revenues for the fairground and concession stalls, collections from the marshalls at the main entrances, and alcohol/food sales. Would also be interested in the costs attributed to policing the event as this is increasingly becoming a limiting factor.

Are you implying that the Police charge for being at public events? They are sometimes at funerals at the Greek Orthodox church in Lausanne Rd to help "direct traffic". I'm sure they don't do that for money.

There are numerous public events at Leeds Castle - concerts, firework displays etc. The police charge thousands for their presence.

I think it is terribly sad that the Ally Pally fireworks have been cancelled. It was one of the rare events which united people of all ages, created traditions among friends and put Haringey and Ally Pally on the London map for some positive news. I cannot believe that it was not possible to get this event to break even with sponsorships, etc, etc.

I was a some-time professional firer for one of the bigger firework display companies until about three years ago, and I would be very surprised if the fireworks themselves topped £15K. Most of the spend is likely to be on security/stewarding, traffic management, policing, barriers, lighting, and general health & safety/insurance gunk. It would be interesting to see the cost breakdown, and how much income was received.
As an aside, I was on the team for the Ally Pally display once, and it is a nightmare site - on a hill, with the audience all around you. What goes up comes down in pieces...
It's a shame it's gone though.
In the current climate I think a bit of creative events organisation to give lots of people a good time at a reasonable cost should be high on the Council's agenda!

You are right it should be high on the agenda but Haringey council can't organise a piss up in a brewery. Look at the few great events we have around here e.g. the hornsey ymca fun run and the greenlanes festival - all organised with little or no involvement or support from Haringey council.
