Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Over Moka Lunch and Irish Times twice this week I pondered some of the great imponderables of our time, ten of which I submit to your consideration:

a. Do Internet Cafes make any money on their coffee?

b. Was Cafe Moka ever intended to be an Internet cafe?

c. Was Cafe Moka ever intended to turn a profit?

d. How many hours can you spend over your laptop, a pot of Earl Grey and a brownie?

e. If you bring your own, shouldn't Kevin charge £10 for Wifi-corkage?

f. If six laptops spread over three tables, where do I insinuate myself?

g. If six laptops colonise the Moka for 2hours+, won't real customers just give it a miss?

h. If you insist on making intrusively loud business calls, how can I concentrate on solving the many problems of Ireland, Greece and the Euro?

i. Without real customers, how long before the Moka folds?

j. Have these bloody people got no homes to go to?

More there than here then Eddie

I've still not been but plan to go next week, will definitely leave the laptop at home.

I was there yesterday late morning and it was buzzy busy with 'real' customers having breakfasts as well as coffee and other stuff. Veritable hive of activity and consuming going on. No laptops in sight but probably cus it was a Sunday.

Point about the cafe culture is that without wi-fi, some parts of the day would be completely dead, no-one at all. Best to have a few laptoppites with coffee and brownie. The profit margin is probably enough, I hope, to keep them ticking over till the busy periods.

I was there last week and there was a variety of customers having lunch and no laptops in sight
Well, I must have happened upon an occasional Conference of Laptopites twice last week. What are the odds on this happening to me twice in a lunchtime? There may have been a meteorite onslaught on the Virgin modems and BTHubs along the Ladder, or maybe half a dozen budding Rowlings were suddenly siezed by the idea of knocking off the next Harryngay Potter in their local caff.

Something to do with the meteor I think??!! Wasnt something falling out of the sky last week and no-one knew where?

The nice guy who runs the place whose name escapes me mentioned a possible writers club to me so maybe it's up and running. Perhaps they do writing competitions, first one to write a novel and drink ten lattes, get a cup cake or something?

There are a lot of self employed, semi employed and unemployed people, including writers, around here. And we need to break out of our confined spaces sometimes. Laptopites are real customers as well. Just ones who are more attached to their bits of technology rather than crosswords, papers, or kids. Though they can do all them as well.

Ruth, all I needed last week at Moka was a little bit of elbow room!

I understand. Sometimes I feel like that when cafes or pubs are full of small children making lots of noise and their strollers all over the place..... But I hope no one takes that the wrong way. I just want to enjoy my coffee peacefully or have nice chat with a friend or two. but sometimes it's the adults making the noise, true. Phones and laptops....

I guess these days any venue offers something to everyone and so there isnt much peace and quiet let alone elbow room! If I find a quiet place with good coffee I'll let you know!

all the best

@OAE, if only the place next door had been allowed their balcony you'd have a bit more elbow room (Wifi's good like that) and you wouldn't have had OnTime install those nasty bollards to stop your corner shop owner driving onto the footpath. I hope you weren't one of the short sighted people who objected to their planning application...
Ha effing Ha!  John, join me in my Campaign to Ban All WR Restaurants from Adding Full Frontal Excrescences whether for Smokers or Laptopites and to Encourage All Restauranteurs to Provide All Genuine Clients and Patrons with Free copies of The Irish Times (preferably ironed).

I think the fact that Kevin had the WiFi set up and running long before the place even had a sign on the door was a clear indication that he had set out to attract the many people who work freelance in the area. I am a laptop as well as a non-laptop Moka person and he always seems glad of my very regular custom. Sometimes it's just a coffee, sometimes it's lunch. If it's full then of course I wouldn't expect a table and I'm sure other laptoppers are the same. Yes, we do have homes to go to, but we like to get out occasionally - that's allowed I think.
