Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
I think we should nominate this site for a Making the Difference award
The deadline is fast approaching and a few people have floated the idea that we should apply for some Making the difference money to support the website.
Hugh wrote recently in relation to this idea
If a nomination was made to support marketing, website fees (what's already being paid (not much) + extra so we can get rid of the ads) and possibly provision for an allowance for additional moderators that would be great for the site. But I think it would have to be clear that the money wouldb't be for me and would have to properly accounted for for specific things.

It's brought people from the same area together - I've had real and virtual conversations with people who I'd never have come into contact with had it not been running. I know it doesn't have the 'physical' (perhaps tangible is a better term) presence of something like a dog show or a mural, but in the 21st century this is one of the ways that people connect with each other and with the institutions in their community, and I think even in its first few months of running has shown the massive potential it has for good. (I'm thinking of the way it mobilised people into action against the applications for gambling licences but I'm sure there are other examples.)
Is there anyone reading this who has had experience of making a bid for money?
Do you think that if we popped in a bid using the above (EA, hope you don't mind me borrowing your words) that we could be successful or could you suggest a better angle?
I don't mind sticking my name on it but I think the collective brain of the 400 + members on this could be invaluable in putting the bid together...but we only have until 31st March.

I put my stupid bid in for subsidised bicycle sheds.
I think a bit of real world advertising of this site would be of benefit but, I really doubt they're going to take down their banners on Green Lanes and put ours up. Adam managed to advertise the "Friends of Ducketts common" for free too. Perhaps getting the award but asking for just £10 would be free advertising?

I think you could get some advertising for this site, there’s enough businesses in Harringay.
I don’t think it would take much to set up some ads on the right hand panel and possibly and avenue for the future even if it just covers costs. Done properly you could make a little wonger for various schemes.

Right, so if I understand John correctly, we ask for a very small amount in the hope award would be granted and the resulting publicity would be good for the site. I would have to consult with Hugh what a 'minimum amount' might look like.
B2, I'm not volunteering to become the marketing manager for this site :D, but your comments are useful for the long term.

Adam managed to obtain £1000 for his Fairfax Rd 'street party' last year from MtD monies. Don't be shy ... simply apply!
For this site if you're talking advertising here's one approach; (..... 'HOL are a successful community website covering the Harringay area. We would like to inform more local people of the site, via local retailers, using postcard advertising. The application is therefore for printing costs of £100.')
NB. £100 comes from Vista print and is for 1500 postcards. Cafes and pubs/restaurants would be happy to put some on their counters/tables.
You may want to add £100 for someone to get the design mocked up. So that's an application of approx £200.
The above is just a suggestion. But the key is to keep the detail of the MtD application brief but clear.

Sorry to be a bit cheeky but as this is v popular post at mo I thought I`d hijack it to remind everyone of the SNT On line survey. Please take a few mins to fill it out if you havnt already. We`ve only had twelve replies from the site.
Through diligent old fashioned methods our total so far is just over sixty of the two hundred we need

Liz, I'm perfectly happy for you to use these words or some variant thereon for the application, and I'm also to put my name on the application alongside yours. I think the more people who do this, the more compelling an application it is.
Is anyone else out there willing to put their name on the application?
