The Brownswood re-opens as a real ale pub
Fans of real ale will be glad to hear that The Brownswood Pub on Green Lanes, near Clissold Park had re-opened offering 8 hand pumps with real ale, cider, stout, perry and something called lager(?).
It also has a kitchen offering pub grub and does Sunday lunch.
Pictures on the website suggest it has had a classy makeover.
All of which does make me feel a bit sad that no company feels that they can do a similar makeover on The Queens Head.

We were in there a week ago, and they've done a really good job. It's unbelievable how much lighter the place is, and it's great that the upstairs space is finally being properly utilised. The Brownswood was fine for somewhere to watch the football, but this is a great improvement. An excellent choice of drinks on offer, which makes it a much more attractive proposition than equally impressively done-out Great Northern Railway Tavern, with its limited offerings.
Looking at their website, the other pubs they run are also all decent/cracking pubs.

Location location location.... The Brownswood is near Clissold Park whilst QH is next to Ducketts Common and Turnpike Lane... Companies look at these things and the potential clientele. They are not going to invest millions if they think there are social problems and trouble nearby. Even pre-riots, the catchment area of the QH would look problematic to potential investors. If the QH had any potential, Wetherspoons might have taken it on but clearly, it's too problematic.

Yep, sadly I think there's a fair bit more potential for a pub of that ilk down where the Brownswood is. Despite not being the best pub in the world, it was usually pretty busy when the football was on the tV, gets a lot of trade from the climbing centre, a fair amount when Arsenal are at home, and from people drifting across from the park. Now that it's actually selling drinks you might actually enjoy, I'd imagine a lot more of the "middle-class" folk in the area will use it as a local too rather than wandering across to Stoke Newington, Stroud Green etc. It was lovely being in there on a bright, sunny Sunday afternoon.
I'd love for someone to do something similar with the Queens, but I can't see it happening.

I will definitely visit the Brownswood soon. It can be a trek down to Stokie high street but this pub is right next to bus stop. Brilliant.
I think we have to accept that the QH is gone. It is not a viable pub business as it stands and the local catchment area not ideal for developers. That's not being snobby but putting business head on! The demographics of the area plus the passing trade potential very different to the Brownswood.
We have to move on from the QH and be happy that we have the lovely Salisbury pub right slap bang in the middle of our neighbourhood.
