Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Dear all,

Just recently elected as the new Chairman of the Tottenham Conservatives Association, I had the trauma and misfortune Thursday last on my way home to have been robbed and assaulted in Harringay Passage just off Turnpike Lane last Thursday night. A rather big strike to the head by three local men (probably around 19/20 years old) causing a considerable deep wound and a lot of blood lost. After being assaulted and threatened I was then robbed of my wallet and BlackBerry. Luckily, I did not become unconscious from the attack and managed to stagger to the local Hornsey Police Station where I reported the crime. Staff there were helpful and I was glad they were open. They telephoned for an ambulance and then I was taken the A&E unit at the Whittington. I would like to formally express my gratitude to the staff who treated me there – consummate professionalism and excellent care. Sadly, I feel local crime is still a big issue for Haringey and I very much hope that the local Labour Council is doing what it should to reduce attacks like this. In fact, I was informed on the subject that the local Labour Council do not seem to seek to place CCTV in the passages but only have this in the main road areas – most probably for reasons to do with income from parking NOT to protect its local citizens. This is not good – I doubt the local Council would admit to this.

I feel the safety of local citizens needs to be improved.

Anette, Tim would have been assaulted on Turnpike Lane if he had not scarpered down the passage. The passage is (except for the Fairfax/Effingham bit) just as scary for muggers who do not usually like one-on-one odds.

Tim, if you change the title of your post to "Attack on Turnpike Lane" I will buy you all the beer you can drink one evening.

The passage is not dangerous itself, it's the anti-social behaviour of some people which is dangerous. Lots of people use the passage to make their lives easier, so closing it wouldn't be popular.  Might as well say all roads should be closed because they're dangerous.  Lots of people are injured and killed on Haringey's roads, many more than in Harringay Passage.

Yes Alex, correct. As any road it's not dangerous all by itself, it's the people that use it that makes it dangerous. And the antisocial, vomiting, shouty, violent, pissing, mugging, thieving elements that use the passage at night makes it dangerous. It's not an essential route to anything, and can easily be closed. It's not even safe for kids due to needles, broken bottles and dogshit so that argument is gone. And I am sick to death of being woken up every night by people shouting in the passage. Brick it up!

We use it to get to other houses that are in the middle of the ladder (yours for instance). My kids use it to get to school.
a longer walk will make for good exercise.
Not in the fumes of Wightman Rd or Green Lanes. Face it, this place wouldn't be half as cool to live if it wasn't for the passage.

Thanks Anette. I think at least putting CCTV in there might help at least to reassure people. I like the passages so I don't think they need to be closed.

John M - tempting to change my post for that beer! ;-)

With regard to CCTV, I had thought, until now, that there ARE CCTV cameras all along the Passage. There are cameras on lamposts in the Passage that have those semi-circular lenses on them and I had always assumed this was CCTV. If not CCTV, then what??? (Can't offer picture I'm afraid but they are definitely there.....)
You'll have to get a picture I'm afraid. The only "camera" in the passage is between Fairfax and Effingham and that seems to just be for show.

Tim, you're getting famous with this - first Hol, then the local press and today the Standard picked up the story.

Osbawn, are you surprised? The Standard comments are pretty much spot on.

The Haringey Independent story was completely ripped from this website. Poor.

Tim, there ARE CCTV cameras on Turnpike Lane. Did they help? No, thought not. Like I've said to you in a PM, if you recognise them let me know and we'll get some blokes to have a word. They can't go bashing the chairman of the Tottenham Conservative party and get away with it!
