HARINGEY Council is to be congratulated for its statement yesterday about its commitment to our library service.
This is in contrast to the plans of some other councils in the country. Haringey's intention to expand the role of libraries, rather than close them, is definitely the right policy.
At least for once the council is leading and for the right reasons, in the right direction.

Oh I can be worse. This is the view from the 7th floor of my University library in Wellington. I used to sit either there or in the basement with the real nerds (which had just as good a view). I will never forget the silence that we all worked in and the fact that one day a very pretty post-grad student ripped up a piece of paper, chewed it into a ball and threw it very accurately at a snoring student near me.
I guess Simon Jenkins was at home in his nice quiet house with his pornographic library. I can honestly say I would not have been able to pass my exams had it not been for the access I had to that library, full of books and other quiet students. Who knows what it might be like in a house where you're eligible for EMA.
perhaps the style of the library influences the way people think:
what about some teutonic zack:zack?

Thanks for your library porn John. Very impressive institutions by the look.
May visit some.
Makes my wall of books look very very insipid :)
Oh thank you, thank you, Auntie Claire, for saving all our nice bookie-wooks. My Nan's Mum is walking the streets of Harringay and Totnam in her shift, nocking all the doors. She's looking for her old boyfriend, Al Zheimer, but my Nan says he went back to Germany in 1939. Anyway, when she gets tired of walking up the Ladder, my Mum says, she'll probly drop into your new drop-dead senther in our Library. That would be good. Bye, Auntie Claire, and thanks again for making the wheels on my bus go round and round.

Do I detect a note of scepticism, OAE?
As you may have guessed, I'm not a big fan of the oh-great-leader / Mayors / superheads/ way of running things. But sometimes things on LocalGov website are accurate. And even when they appear under the byline of a Council Leader.
Haringey libraries are a success story and they have developed a wide range of extended projects and services. This does not mean they are able to fill every gap created by the Government's cuts. But nor is anyone suggesting they can.
I'm blaming nobody. Except of course people in Government who haven't noticed that bloodletting is rarely beneficial to either the body physic or the body politic.
