Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A "third place for Harringay" has been a recurring theme on the site . The most basic definition of a third place is social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace: a sort of informal comfortable meeting place.

The SpaceMakers network defines them thus: alternative third spaces as "facilities which are neither office nor cafe nor workshop, but have elements of all three and more". This includes co-working spaces, hack labs, arts spaces, social centres, community cafes and similar uses of space. (no I don't know what a 'hack lab' is either)

An idea has been floated that an obvious place to develop a third place is in our local library in Quernmore Road.

So the question is, if such a project should ever get off the ground, what would you want to see there? For me, one of the first thing that springs to mind is a place to get a coffee. What would your ideal 'third place' look like?

Preferably a place that doesn't look like a library. Lots of open space and noise, windows with views, lots of room for buggies, no age discrimination ie no old gits complaining about babies, a decent cup of tea, free internet and newspapers..
ie no old gits complaining about babies ha, ha and presumably no buggy pushers moaning about old gits hogging all the newspapers. Actually I think I might count as both a buggy pusher and an old git
I too count as an old git with a buggy..
ie no old gits complaining about babies
Why do you think we invented drawing rooms?
Thankfully Whites Gentlemen's Club remains traditionally Ruthless about who they'll let in.
In your case, OAE, I suspect the Groucho Marx principle applies: I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.

Now would it be coffee or tea you'd prefer with your ironed copy of the Irish Times in our fantasy third place?
More a large Hennessy, Liz. And the I.T. gives me all the irony I require.
A place with lots of books arranged neatly on shelves. Cosy quiet nooks and no windows to let in the outside world. Buggies ? Bah ! Coffee, no computers, no music, no TVs and no mobile phones. Gentlemen's loos within 15 steps of each leather armchair.

Only kidding Ruth :)
Actually, being a sad old git, The HOL website fits most of my criteria. My own coffee and biscuits, Stimulating arguments discussions, a bit of social concern, lots of amusement, a view over the New River as I read. Something new learned every day and the occasional reference to the Classics to feel smug about.

And it's still only 15 steps to the loo.
and we have the ability to switch people off when they start going on and on and on and on and laugh loudly at our own jokes, tee hee hee
I find myself in close agreement with both of John D's offerings. HOL provides most of what one could wish of an upmarket but sedentary Dad's Army - with occasional little annexes for the ladies, all in their third place, of course.
It's called a 'pub'
Ah James, but it isn't necessarily a pub.

Talking to my hubby today, his idea of a third space was somewhere where he can study, using a laptop and wi-fi, while being able to take a break and get a coffee. As he pointed out, SG library can be quite busy with various events so not conducive to study and often the few places to sit and read are taken early by the newspaper readers. He doesn't want or need a computer as he would bring his own.

So a third space for him, would be somewhere where he can escape from distractions including phones/children/O'Donovans skip lorries thundering up the road, to get down to some serious study/work and able to access wi-fi and refreshment.
